Typically you see lock/latches like the part # 305736 installed at the rear of a horse trailer. The assembly of this is 36 inches long. For a 55 inch long version the part # 3057-55 would work. My parents had several horse trailers and every single one of them used this style.
I pulled up several pictures of 1997 Circle J horse trailers and they all looked like they were using a shorter latch like the # 305736.
If you need a different style feel free to email me back with pictures of your trailer and I will help you further.
