The transmission cooler I recommend for your 1996 Subaru SVX is the Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit with Barb Inlets, Class III # D13503. This cooler will provide a large surface to help further cool the transmission fluid, with the cooler measuring 11 inches wide x 8-3/4 inches tall x 7/8 inches deep.
The plate and fin style transmission cooler offers an increased surface area for cooling over the more traditional tube and fin style. Derale's # C13503 cooler a great size and well suited for your SVX.
The best location to mount the transmission cooler is directly in front of the radiator, behind the vehicle's grille. This will allow for the best air flow for the transmission cooler. The second best location is to mount the cooler after the radiator. The radiator will limit the air flow to the cooler, but will still provide sufficient air for cooling. It is a good idea to check the engine compartment of your vehicle to ensure that you have enough room to mount the cooler.
I have attached the installation instructions for the cooler as well as a help article on transmission coolers for you. I have also attached an installation video of the cooler on a Honda Pilot for you to have an idea of the installation process.
