Is there a housing or adapter that can be attached to the receiver so the wires are protected and not just hanging there, other than just the clip that you can attach from the wires to the receiver

Yes, you can attach a mounting bracket to the hitch on your 2013 Nissan Xterra to hold a trailer connector. For a 4-Way flat connector such as # C56225, you can use bracket # 18144 and attach it to bracket # 18140 which will then attach to the hitch.
If you have a 7-Way such as # 118266 then you can use bracket # PK12711U with # 18140.
Nothing should be drilled into or welded directly to the hitch.
