Question:
Hi, I have a 14-ft aluminum boat/motor/trailer package total weight less than 1000 lbs. The trailer has a two-inch ball receiver - what is my best option for pulling this with my little SUV?

The trailer hitch I recommend for your 2005 Tribute is the etrailer, part # e56AR. This is a Class lll hitch and it has a 2 inch receiver opening. I recommend going with a Class lll hitch because it gives you a lot more versatility when you want to carry any accessories or when towing. You can use Class l or ll accessories in the Class lll hitch but if you install a Class ll hitch like part # 36501 you will be limited to Class l or ll items.
If you plan on doing some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.
If the ball mount kit does not include a ball mount with the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, check out the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.
If you do not have the trailer wiring on your Tribute I recommend part # 118426. You simply plug the harness into the connection points behind the trail lights, and run a hot lead to the positive post on the battery. This is used if you don't have the factory tow package.
If you have the factory tow package but do not have a trailer connector, you will need part # 40455. This plugs into the connection point behind the rear bumper near the driver side tail light. to activate the towing package you may need to see a Mazda dealer to get the relay needed.
When working with electrical connectors I recommend using dielectric grease like part # 11755. This keeps dirt and moisture out of the electrical connections and helps prevent corrosion.
