Weight Capacity of Trailer Tire 4.80-12 on a Jon Boat Trailer

Published 01/12/2016

Question:

Hello, I have a jon boat trailer for a 15 foot boat, rated at 1200 lbs, it has and calls for a .480-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12inch - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range B, but thats only 785-lb maximum load at 60 psi, would it be better to go with a C rating? also, is the total Lbs allowed doubled by the 2 tires so, 2 B 785lb tires X2=1570? or is it still 785? Just want to make sure I put the appropriate tire on. Thanks!

The weight rating is per tire so it will be a combined weight of 2 x 785lbs or 2 x 990lbs per axle.

The size you mentioned 4.80-12 with a 4 inch rim can handle the load range B of 2 x 785lbs for a total of 1,570lbs at 60 psi or a load range C of 2 x 990lbs for a total of 1,980lbs at 90 psi. I recommend the load range C like the tire and wheel combo # TA36RR.

Since the combined capacity of all the tires will need to exceed the gross trailer weight when loaded and ready to tow then either load range b or c will work for you nicely.

I have linked a help article on tire sizing and our tire and wheel combos as well as the tire in your desired higher capacity for your convenience.
