Trailer Tail Light Kit with Brake Lights and Turn Signals on the Same Circuit
Published 09/23/2015 >
Question:
I recently purchased a different trailer light kit and installed it on a small utility trailer. Only after installing it and finding that no lights worked did I notice a statement in the directions that stated something to the effect of If this light kit is used with a tow vehicle with a separate brake lamp from the turn indicators, you will need to buy an adapter.inch I know that every light and the wiring harness had good grounds, and that the vehicles electrical wiring is functioning properly, since a different light system worked on my truck 06 Toyota Tacoma w/ tow package the day before. So my question is: if I get this kit, will I experience the same difficulties or need additional equipment? Ive owned two other trailers and never had this problem, so this is a new one to me. Thank you!

Trailer tail light kit # TL29BK does work on a combined system meaning that the turn signals and brake lights are on the same circuit, which is what you want. You will not have the same issue with it.
Please note that this light kit has lights that ground through the mounting studs. The mounting surface must be clean and free of corrosion and avoid putting anything in between the light and the trailer frame.
If you do run into a ground problem then make sure that the vehicle side and trailer side connectors are clean and free of corrosion inside and out. The main connector grounds should be attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces.
If there is anything between a light ground and the metal trailer frame or if the trailer has an aluminum frame, tilt bed, or folding tongue, any of these things can interrupt the ground. Running jumper wires from the light grounds to the main trailer connector ground can help.
