Should Crossbars be Spread Apart More than 24 Inches to Use Yakima JayLow on a 2012 Toyota RAV4
Updated 08/12/2015 | Published 08/11/2015 >
Question:
I have a 2012 RAV4 with the Yakima Jaylow and Im using it on factory bars. It was SO easy to install I keep thinking I missed a step. It tightened up nicely on the bars so I didnt need to use the adapters hopefully that was ok. I have the Jaylow snug, right up against the side of the rails because I thought that would be the best way to take advantage of the loader. Is that right? Also, Im wondering if I need to space out the rails more. I was right on the 24 inch minimum with the position of the racks so I left them where they were when I installed the Jaylow. But Im wondering if I should spread them out more. I can move the front rack ahead considerably but Im not sure if Im supposed to. Some expert info would be great. I havent actually picked up my new boat yet from the store, its a Wilderness Systems Pungo 120, but want to make sure I have things in the right position so there isnt much to mess around with when I do. Thanks for your help!

It sounds like you are good to go! You could move that front bar a little more forward if you want. It will provide more stability that way. Usually you will want to have a J-style carrier such as # Y04073 close to the side of the vehicle so that it is easier to load the kayak. It sounds like that is what you have done so the only other advice I can give is to make sure the JayLow is still snug every once in awhile and be sure to tie down the bow and stern of the kayak.
