Question:
I have a 2014 Ford Escape - titanium edition. I am interested in a class II trailer hitch that is both hidden and allows for the greatest access to my hands-free liftgate. The primary use for the hitch would be for a bike rack or cargo carrier. A simple install would be preferred, but the use of the liftgate is more important. Is there a specific rack that would meet these requirements? Thank you for your help!

The Draw-Tite Class II trailer hitch receiver, part # 36529 meets the requirements you listed. From the rear, the only portion of the hitch that's visible would be the receiver tube and the hoops for the safety chains. The crossbar would be tucked behind the bumper. The hitch was specifically designed so it wouldn't interfere with the hands-free liftgate option. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the most difficult, this installation is considered a 4. I've linked you to the installation instructions as well as to an install video.
If there's a chance you might use the hitch for towing purposes, you will need a ball mount like # 36051, but you will want to measure for the rise or drop you'll need to tow level. You'd also need to choose the properly-sized trailer ball. For a 1-7/8 inch ball, use part # 19256 or # 19258 for a 2 inch ball. For a trailer wiring harness, use part # 118566. I'll also link you to an install video for the wiring harness.
If you don't already have a cargo carrier, I really like the Curt # C18110.
For a bike rack, I really like the Thule Hitching Post Pro, part # TH934XTR. The Hitching Post Pro is a reasonably priced rack with all the important features like padded cradles, sturdy rubber straps to secure the bikes to the rack, anti sway cradles that prevent the bikes from swaying back and forth during transport and an anti rattle hitch bolt that holds the bike rack tightly in the receiver to prevent it from moving around.
