Is Horsepower And Torque Affected By Octane Level Of Fuel When Using Performance Programmers

Question:

I have a 2007 chevy Silverado 1500 with a 6.0L engine and I was looking for a performance programmer for it. I was wondering which programmer is the best for that particular truck when using 87 octane fuel for performance only I dont particularly want to use premium fuel but I want to gain the most horsepower and torque I can with the 87 octane fuel.

I called my contact at Superchips and asked what the breakdown for performance is when using the Flashpaq Performance Tuner, part # SU2845. There are 5 settings you can choose from and they are set for the octane level of the fuel you are using. They said for the lowest level of increase using the 87 octane fuel you could expect and increase of about 33 horsepower and 24 torque increase. They said that is dependent on the engine you have in your truck. You can check the VIN and if the letter in the 8th position has a U those are the levels you would expect.

If the 8th position has a letter Y then the increase would be approximately 35-1/2 horsepower and 39.7 torque. Those numbers would increase if you use fuel with a higher octane level.

Another programmer I recommend for your 07 Silverado is the Edge Gas Evolution CTS2 Performance Tuner, part # EP39YR.

This programmer has 4 levels you can set to improve the horsepower and torque. I called my contact at Edge and they told me that in order to be able to use 87 octane fuel you would only be able to use level 1 and level 2 on the programmer. If you want to use level 3 and 4 on the programmer you would have to use higher octane fuel.

At the highest level with this programmer and using higher octane fuel you can see an increase of up to 25 horsepower and 29 torque, but as my contact said, those numbers will decrease significantly using lower octane fuel.
