Fifth Wheel Bracket Kit and Brake Controller Recommendation for 1998 GMC C/K Series Pick Up Truck

Updated 06/20/2015 | Published 06/19/2015

Question:

I need a hitch 5th wheel hitch kit for my 1998 GMC K3500 Crew Cab, 8foot bed. I have a Husky 16K Hitch but need the rails and brackets to mount in for towing my trailer. Can you give me the proper part numbers for the custom rails that I would need. I would also like recommendation on a trailer brake control with wiring kit.

There are some fifth wheel hitch installation kits available for your 1998 GMC K3500 truck, but they are universal kits that would require drilling into the truck frame. None of our manufacturers offer a custom, no-drill kit for 4th Generation GM C/K pickups.

All the kits we offer use industry standard bed mounting rails, all of which would be compatible with your Husky hitch. I'd recommend the Reese Universal Bracket/Rail Kit, part # RP30035.

For a brake controller, I'd recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. The P2 is extremely easy to use, and is very highly rated by our customers. To install it on your truck, you'll also need our Brake Controller Installation Kit, part # ETBC7 and a functional 4-pole trailer connector, part # 118315 if you don't already have one.

I'd also recommend a 7-way connector for your truck bed, part # 20024 . I've linked you to install instructions, as well as to video showing a brake controller being installed on a 1996 Chevy C/K. The procedure on your 1998 GMC K3500 would be identical.
