Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

I need to mount and balance these but they look like good tires. The sidewall is thinner due to the "C" load range but that should be fine and hopefully they are very durable.

The online information on how to determine bolt pattern and measure a wheel was very useful to help me determine what size tire to order, since I was planning to use some rims I already owned. Once ordered, the 2 trailer tires arrived quickly, but a day apart (?). I had them mounted on my rims, balanced, and then swapped them out with the old wheels. No installation problems, and the trailer pulls nicely as always. Now we shall see how the tires wear over time.

I recieved my tires and wheels yesterday. I was in need of these quickly since I was leaving on a trip the same week. Dana M. at etrailer hooked me up with the right tires and wheels for my trailer and the shipping was as promised. Thank you guys for a great transaction. I would definitely buy again.

Its a trailer tire, what's to say? Time and milage will tell, then I'll review as to durability and endurance. I received it in only 3 days which is amazing, and what arrived was just what was ordered; as always with etrailer. Great service, good products, fair prices.

Review from a similar Karrier Radial in Trailer Tires and Wheels

I bought these for our 4 x 8 Carryall trailer. My sister and I use the trailer behind our Subarus a lot for hauling stuff to, from, and around our little farm, hauling the 4 wheeler, kayaks and canoes, when we go camping, hauling firewood, gravel, fertilizer, etc. etc. etc. It's cheaper than having a truck! Overall I am impressed. Surprised at first by how they were packed - tread to tread in a large heavy cardboard box. I've bought other small tires elsewhere and had them come so tightly banded together that it made it hard to spread the beads to get them to seat. I mounted these with a couple old tire irons we have here on the farm, took less than 5 minutes for the 2, (I'm a 72 year old woman) they took air right away and the beads seated with less than 20 PSI. They look good! They are a little bigger in diameter and in tread width. The 4.80/12 tires they replaced always looked... skinny. These look like real tires. The tread pattern is impressive too. It's a water moving automotive design, not the squiggly grooves of the old tires. I was always concerned putting 90 PSI in the old ones in order to carry the weight, especially as they are now almost 20 years old, weather cracked and well worn. These new tires max inflate at 65 PSI. We had 6" of snow the day after I mounted them and I had to go pick up some lumber. The trailer handled beautifully on the snow covered and then wet roads. It rides nicer too, not as jumpy as it was empty. Time will tell how they hold up, too soon to tell. But.... as noted above, they are noticeably wider than the 4.80s they replaced, they extend beyond the fenders about an inch, a fact I had not anticipated. They threw an awful lot of slop on the lumber from the wet roads, and I'm concerned that a heavy load might bring the outside flange of the fender into contact with the tread. I guess I'm going to have to do something about the fenders. Time to fire up the welder! LOL

Comments
Well we cut the fenders in half lengthwise fired up the welder and added 2 inches to their width. That resolved the issue of the tires throwing slop. Taint particularly pretty, but its functional. As for the tires, they are fine. Weve run them a year now, out on the road and around the farm. Im pleased with them. We tend to load our trailer heavy, just had 560 board feet of green lumber on it, the tires didnt seem to mind at all. Except for the mud on them, they look as good as new. They ride well, have not given me any issues at all.

Review from a similar Karrier Radial in Trailer Tires and Wheels

After two seasons on my tandem axle boat trailer (5100 lb combination) I’ve been very happy with the tires. I have about 5k miles on them and they are holding up nicely. Highly recommend, far better performance than what I got out of the factory supplied tires (tread separated and broken cords after 2 years on factory tires)

Poor description. Any other company that sells wheel and tire combos ships them assembled and filled with air. I was disapponted when these arrived not even mounted on the rims. Now I need to pay a tire shop to mount them.

These tires are exactly what i needed. They came fast and didnt cost an arm and a leg. Tractor supply tires didnt last a month hauling my Z turn mower. They had a poor load rating of 745lbs. These are rated at 1220lbs and handle tye weight of my mowing equipment without fail. I will be ordering a backup set soon!

Very economical choice to step up to a load range D tire. I had no luck locally finding a decent tire under $100ea so on a whim I checked etrailer. I bought (7) with free shipping and the tire quality looks good. I knocked off one star because dealing with the staples in the shipping boxes is a PITA and must be removed to recycle.

Review from a similar Karrier Radial in Trailer Tires and Wheels

I needed a quality set of tires for my 1959 Lil Loafer camper trailer, the only tires I could find at any tire shop local to me were bias ply and nothing over a load range D. So needless to say those would wear out real fast and not track very will. These Kenda radials will fill the need perfectly. A load range E 10 ply rating will give me the confidence I need when hitting the road. I had them mounted at a local tire shop and took it out for a test run and they sure help the little trailer track nice. Great tire for a little vintage trailer. Delivery was fast as well, less than a week. The price is fair with the exception of the Canadian exchange on the US dollar. And the website works smooth for orders, I'll be back for other stuff for sure.

Review from a similar Karrier Radial in Trailer Tires and Wheels

Got the new tires and had them mounted up. Im glad etrailer had a better small tire for my 5x8 trailer. Ive Had other tire shops tell me 4 or 6ply was the only ply available for the small trailer i had and the farm stores only offered the 4 or 6 ply tire. Etrailer had 10 ply, radial tires for my need that is rated up to 65 mph on the highway and im very happy. Living on a gravel road, and using the small trailer on the farm i would have flat tires all the time with the old weaker 6 ply tires it came with and they wouldnt last very Long if used them on the pavement.

Comments
Still going strong. No flats and tread wear is still doing great also. Id say theres only about 1000 miles on them as i dont use the trailer every day but i did use it on my farm where the other tires wouldnt last long before getting a flat from a cut off tree stump or thorns. I will buy again when needed and have told plenty other people about the tires and where to get them.

This was the 2nd boat trailer tire we have ordered from Etrailer.com. The first time I searched locally for the needed tire with no results. A tire dealer actually told me about Etrailer.com. I immediately found the tire I needed both times. I was able to track the tire from the time “it rolled out” until it was delivered. Great service and beyond prompt.

I put them on a 28' enclosed snowmobile trailer to replace my 8 year old tires that looked good on the outside but were blowing up on the highway. I put about 2000 miles on these so far. I'm towing about 6000 lbs. They track nice, and are holding up well.

  • Can a 215/75-15 Tire Replace a 225/75-15 Tire
A 215/75-15 tire will fit a 15 inch rim and has a rim width range of 5-1/2 to 7-1/2 inches. A 225/75-15 tire also fits a 15 inch rim and has a rim width range of 5 to 7 inches. Assuming the width of your 15 inch rim is within the 5-1/2 to 7-1/2 inch range of the 215/75-15 tire you will be able to substitute it. Keep in mind, the 215/75-15 is not a common trailer size so you want to make sure it is designed to be used with your trailer. I would look to see if the tire has ST on it for...

  • Swapping to Larger Trailer Tires and Correct Load Range
The 225/75R15 is going to have about 3/4" taller sidewall so you will want to make sure you currently have about 2" of clearance around the tire when your suspension is compressed. Remember to also check the distance between both tires as this will decrease by 1-1/2". The width of the tire is going to only increase just under 1/2". So an additional 1/4" on each side of the tire. If these all work for your clearances than the next step is the load range. There are 3 load ranges available...

  • Tire Recommendation for the Dexstar Steel Mini Mod Trailer Wheel # AM20537
We do not offer the Dexstar Steel Mini Mod Trailer Wheel # AM20537 with a Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10251 pre-mounted on it. The two are compatible with each other so your best option would be to order them separately and then have them mounted at a shop local to you. I attached review videos for both products for you to check out as well.

  • Recommended Tires To Replace Pirelli Scopion LT215/75R15 Tire On Boat Trailer
I have a different option for you, but the Pirelli Scopion LT215/75R15 is a vehicle tire and not a trailer tire, so you would need to order them from a local tire shop. With that said vehicle tires are not recommend for trailers as they have a much weaker sidewall than trailer tires, and as such are more prone to failure. I would replace all of the tires on the trailer with actual trailer tires. I recommend the Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # AM10245 which...

  • Replacement Trailer Tire Recommendation to Replace H78-15ST
The overall diameter of the tire size 205/75R15 will be 27.1 inches and the overall diameter of the 225/75-15 will be 28.4 inches. This should be about the same overall height as your current tires but you can measure the diameter with a tape measure to be sure. In the taller size of 225/75R15 you could use a C range as they have 2,150 lb capacity like part # AM10251, but if you go with the other size you would need a D range to have enough like # TTWTRTM2057515C
