Question:
Would it be possible to purchase and install and use only one half of the rack, that is, the rear, and instead of the front rack use a generic Yakima-like cabtop rack that I already have? My pickup is a 1986 Nissan 2-door with 6 foot bed that is 55inch across interiorly. What would the cost be for a 1/2 rack if that is possible?

I think I have a better solution for you as long as you have a hitch installed on your vehicle, but the # DZ951600 that you referenced isn't sold individually.
Instead I would recommend the Rhino-Rack T-Load # RTL002. This will install in a rear mounted hitch and will provide a crossbar at the rear of your vehicle like you said you were interested in.
If you are in need of a hitch for your 1986 Nissan Truck you would want the part # 75186.
