Question:

I am driving to Winter Park, CO next weekend and would like to have chains in case they are needed. Through extensive searching it doesnt appear that there are many options for this tire. The Ford Owners Manual suggests only using cable type chains but recommends against using them with this tire size. I see that there are numerous suggestions for the Glacier #PW2028C model. Is this your best recommendation? Should I really not use chains in the event they are needed? Please advise and thank you in advance for your help! I took the attached picture only to get the tire info...perhaps it gives you an appreciation for the clearance? 2010 Ford Expedition EL 2WD - P275/55R20 Thanks!

Thanks for the photo of your tire on your 2010 Ford Expedition. That helps when we are trying to find an item that will fit, especially snow tire chains.

You are correct that the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains, part # PW2028C are designed to fit your 275/55R20 tires.

If your owner's manual states that you should not put any tire chains on tires this size on your Expedition I cannot recommend any tire chains that will work for you. They base their statement on the fact that you probably have very limited space with these tires installed, and are meant as a caution so that there is not damage to the vehicle or you.

If you decide you want to use the cable system anyway, I do recommend a little further security to hold them in place with tensioners like part # PW100.

I would contact my dealer and explain the issue and explain where you are travelling. They may waive the warranty issues and say it is okay to use chains if you use extreme caution. The chains I recommend are the Titan Chain Alloy Snow tire chains, part # TC2327. These will give better traction than cables and are still Class S rated tire chains.

If you decide against the tire cables you may want to take a look at the Rampage Grip Track Vehicle Traction Plates, part # RA7702. You simply keep these stored in the included nylon bag until needed. Slip them behind the wheel if needed and drive right out.
