Flat Towing a 2012 Ford Fusion, Parts Recommendation

Updated 02/03/2015 | Published 02/02/2015

Question:

Ladies and/or Gentlemen I just purchased a 2014 Forest River Gerogetown XL Motor Home. Towing capacity is 5000#. Do you have a list of automobiles that can be towed with 4 wheels on the ground without a lot of modifications? My goal is a 2, 3 or 4 year old car in good to excellent condition with fairly low mileage. Price range would be from $9M to $12M. Also, I have a 2006 Lincoln Town Car in outstanding condition to sell/trade. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you,

The manual transmission 2012 Ford Fusion is a very popular vehicle that can be flat towed without having to install any lube pumps for the transmission or axle disconnects.

You will want to start with a base plate kit first. For that you would want the Roadmaster Base Plate kit part # 4420-1.

In addition to the base plates, you will also need a compatible tow bar, safety cables, lighting, and supplemental braking to flat tow your vehicle. The most popular compatible tow bar is the Falcon 2, # RM-520. For safety cables you can use # RM-643. The coiled design helps keep the cables off of the ground.

For lighting you can use the bulb and socket kit, # RM-155, and not have to worry about cutting and splicing into the vehicle wiring.

And finally, most states now require supplemental braking in the vehicle being flat towed. The easiest system to set up and use is the Even Brake proportional system, # RM-9400, that applies the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the two vehicle is braking. This is the safest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on both vehicles.

I have included a couple of helpful links to our articles on flat towing for you. Be sure to consult the vehicle owners manual for more specific information on flat towing your vehicle.
