Installation
This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area. You will have to remove the trunk floor coverings, storage trays, rear scuff panel, and side trim panels to access these connection points. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.
Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.
It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.
A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.
Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.
Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.
Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.
Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

This trailer wiring installation was completed without too much fuss. The converter box wiring for the drivers side tail lights was very short and barely cleared the side panel when replacing. They should be about 8 or 10 inches longer.
Wiring the harness went as described in the attached directions. Directions were clear and concise. Wiring the 12-volt power cable on the Kia Niro... Not so fun :)
A few weeks ago, another driver was kind enough to tell me that my driver's side brake lights were out. They are LED, so I new it wasn't a bulb. I checked all of the fuses in the engine compartment fuse block and the interior fuse block as well. No blown fuses. I disassembled the interior panels (a pain) to access the custom-fit Curt Unit connectors and unplugged them, and plugged the OE tailight/brakelight connectors back together and the brake lights now work fine without the Curt Unit. As it turns out, the the warranty is for one-year and this Curt Unit failed after one-year and three weeks. etrailer won't do anything about it. I will be reaching out to Curt and hope that they make this right, otherwise I won't be buying any Made-in-Mexico Curt products ever again.
Works fine in my 2020 Kia Niro EV. It was a little hard to route the wire from the rear to the 12v battery, but I was able to follow the brake lines and tie to them along the driver's side.
I only occasionally use the hitch as the Niro EV is not rated for towing, but since it shares the chassis with the hybrid - which is rated for towing small loads - the hitch fits perfectly.
Perfect fit. I only wish the trailer plug was about 18" longer. I hid the box in the wall on the left side and ran the trailer cord back to the middle of the car and fished it through an existing hole in the bottom of the rear compartment. There was a rubber gromet in the hole, so I removed the gromet, cut a slit in it, ran the cable through the hole and reinstalled the gromet with the wire running through the slit. All is great, but cable is only sticking out about a foot. A little longer would have been nice.
Good wiring fit. Eight more inches and would have been perfect to place control box anywhere I wanted.
Extremely helpful instructions to install on my Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-in [PHEV]. LOOKS GREAT.
