What equipment do I need to tow a trailer?
The equipment you need depends on your trailer and tow vehicle, but most towing setups include a trailer hitch, ball mount, hitch ball, trailer wiring, and safety chains. Trailers with brakes may also need a brake controller, while some setups can benefit from weight distribution, suspension enhancement, towing mirrors, or other towing equipment.
How do I choose the right trailer hitch?
Start with your vehicle's year, make, and model. A custom-fit hitch is designed around your vehicle's frame and mounting points. Use our vehicle fitguide to see the trailer hitches designed to fit your vehicle, then compare receiver size and capacity for what you plan to tow or carry.
How do I pick the right ball mount?
Start by measuring from the ground to the top of your hitch receiver, then from the ground to the bottom of your trailer coupler when the trailer is level. The difference helps determine the rise or drop you need. You'll also need a ball mount that matches your receiver size and has enough capacity for your trailer.
Do I need a brake controller for my trailer?
If your trailer has electric or electric-over-hydraulic brakes, you'll generally need a compatible brake controller to activate them from the tow vehicle. The right controller depends on your vehicle, trailer brake system, and how you want the controller installed.Need Help With Your Towing Setup?
