All-In-One Suspension System

When towing or hauling a heavy load, you may encounter a number of problems that can make your driving experience difficult or dangerous, such as sway, body roll, or bottoming out. When your vehicle is weighted down, your factory leaf springs can't counteract these problems to the extent that they are supposed to. The weight will overpower the leaf springs and cause them to twist or flatten out. When that happens, they cannot support, level, or stabilize your vehicle effectively. Additionally, because your factory leaf springs are passive, they won't begin to tackle problems such as sway until those problems have already started.

How RAS Works

Each RAS unit has a powerful variable-rated coil tension spring that converts your passive leaf spring into a mechanically-active system. Once your vehicle is loaded, the tension springs immediately activate to absorb and support the weight. This allows your leaf springs to maintain their bowed position and keeps them from flattening out or flipping over, which greatly hinders their ability to bear a heavy load. The tension springs are variable-rated, which means that the heavier your load is, the more assistance they provide to your leaf springs. Because of this design, RAS reacts instantaneously, whereas hydraulics, air springs, and other suspension systems take time to react. And unlike your factory leaf springs, RAS stops sway and sag before they even start to happen. Additionally, when your vehicle is unloaded, the tension springs disengage, allowing your leaf springs to perform as intended without hardening your ride. RAS won't hinder your leaf springs' movement, nor will it cause any friction between any of the brackets.


Eliminates Axle Wrap and Wheel Hop

RAS Eliminates Axle Wrap

When under a heavy load, leaf springs are especially susceptible to axle wrap, which can cause wheel hop. Wheel hop is when the tires lose their grip on the road, causing a jarring, up-and-down movement. Axle wrap occurs when the circular motion of the tires cause the leaf springs to twist or rotate. If the leaf springs twist far enough, wheel hop can occur. RAS stabilizes your leaf springs by absorbing the force of the load they're trying to support. This eliminates axle wrap and wheel hop, as well as prevents your vehicle from bottoming out. Because of this, less strain is put on your vehicle. And by reducing some of this wear and tear, RAS helps extend the life of your leaf springs, shock absorbers, shackles, and even tires.

When driving along a curve while towing or hauling a heavy load, the back end of your vehicle or trailer can start to shift with that weight. If your factory leaf springs have flattened or twisted under this load, they won't be able to prevent it from shifting. Because of this, your trailer will sway away from your vehicle. This makes driving challenging and dangerous, as it increases the risk of body roll, which is when your vehicle drastically leans to one side. This can often cause you to completely lose control of your vehicle. Body roll is especially prevalent with multi-passenger vans and vehicles towing long campers, trailers, or boats. RAS provides a much safer ride by reinforcing your factory leaf springs and stabilizing your load. This helps prevent sway from occurring and reduces the chance of body roll while cornering, turning, and swerving. RAS also lessens the rocking motion that happens during windy conditions or when a semi passes by on the road.

When your vehicle is overloaded, the bulk of the weight transfers to the rear axle. Your factory leaf springs then become overwhelmed by this weight, as they are not strong enough to support it. In addition to loss of traction, it can also cause poor headlight aim, unintentional swerving, and an extremely bumpy and uncomfortable ride. This keeps your ride level from front to back whether you are hauling a load in the bed or towing a boat, trailer, or camper. RAS is also customizable to your vehicle. During installation, the tension setting of the coil tension springs should be increased to exactly 40 percent for improved road handling and support. To do this, rotate the springs while keeping the threaded rod still. As you turn the spring, use the included 2mm black spacer as a gauge to measure the widening gaps between the coils.

This custom-fit kit comes fully assembled and is easy to install. Each RAS unit simply bolts onto your factory leaf spring with the included hardware, and drilling, welding, and cutting aren't required. First, position the eye hook bracket so that it wraps around the top of the factory leaf spring eye. Then the axle bracket secures under the leaf spring and around the factory U-bolts on the other side of the leaf spring pack. Once the maintenance-free RAS units are fully installed, you won't need to monitor them as you would with air springs.

I have Nissan 2500 van that I have converted for traveling. Its gross weight is 9000 lbs, and with all that is in it everyday it weighs around 7000 lbs. It has enough weight it sags. I occasionally pull a trailer, which makes the sag even worse. I install the RAS, and it added about 1 1/2 inches to the truck height. I haven't pulled with it yet, but around town it rides great. Maybe, a very slight stiffening of the suspension, but nothing like what Timbren does to a truck. These things were terrible to install. The instructions said there wasn't much clearance on this vehicle, so take apart the unit and put the spring hooks on before lifting the vehicle. I thought I was going to have to unbolt the springs. Using a jack in the right place allowed me to finally getting them into place. It did require much frustration, and some choice language before I finally got them installed. I'm still looking forward to towing with them to see if the sag problem is fixed. I do recommend these. Again on a Nissan van they are a b*tch to install. 650068

2019 Nissan NV 2500

2019 Nissan NV 2500 Cargo van owners please read! Etrailer sent the wrong parts the first time, but they took care of it right away. Their customer service is great and this review should not reflect upon them. The RAS seemed like a good solution to level the vehicle and reduce body roll, so I ordered them and installed. With the RAS at 40% and recalibrated at 40% after a test drive, it seems to do nothing. It does help if the van is totally empty, but who drives around an empty cargo van? I was at about 1/2 of the max payload and it still sagged in the back. I can’t speak for other applications, but this is not a good fit for Nissan NV. You have to remove a leaf spring bolt on this application while installing so it will hook between the spring and shackles. I wound up taking the van to a reputable spring shop and had the leafs built up. It only cost me $100 more than the RAS, and now it drives like it should. 656563

I spoke with my Roadmaster representative, and he explained that with this product, it is important to remember that it is designed to strengthen the existing leaf springs not resist and keep the vehicle perfectly level at all times. Anybody installing the kit should expect a little bit of give in rear leaf springs initially, then engage even more proportionate to and to counteract shifts in weight and uneven road surfaces, otherwise you’d expect a harsh ride to due lack of flexion in the leaf springs. Generally, if the vehicle is squatting up to 3-4 inches at the wheel well before installing the Roadmaster you should expect our kit to stay near level with somewhere between ¼’’ – 1’’ of give after installation. Beyond that, our kit will still help but from a load leveling standpoint it simply won’t be as noticeably effective. The vast majority of customers in the market for some sort of suspension enhancement product like this fall into this category. For the extremely heavy haulers & towers on the higher end of the spectrum that don’t want to purchase a bigger truck, they will usually tell them to go with an air bag set up.

Product quality, very well made However, installation not nearly as easy as listed on etrailer.com - they show a video of instal and steps that are really simple. However, when i got the kit and directions for my Nissan NV van, now it required dropping the leaf springs and installing while the vehicle was completely suspended. This is not that easy on a 3500 because those are some heavy strong springs. Plus it showed needing to adjust the springs with the suspension unloaded which is much harder to do yourself than if the vehicle weight was on the axle on a set of stands. 796858

I’m impressed by the quality and engineering of this product. The person who designed it should win an award! I installed this on my 2013 F150 in preparation for hauling around my 1998 24’ coachman I’ve been working on fixing up all winter. I didn’t want a solution that would stiffen up the trucks ride because it’s very comfortable. I can’t feel any change in ride. Installation was very easy, took about an hour for everything and just a few tools. I haven’t towed with it yet but I did hook my trailer up and it didn’t squat like it did before. I have a 2016 F-150 4x4 with a 2 inch leveling kit and 305 tires. I am towing a 26RR Grey Wolf camper. I beleave it is 4992 lbs dry wait and 7775 lbs loaded. It is meant to be pulled with 1/2 ton trucks. Want to give all specs to be fair to the product. The product was easy to install. I adjusted spring to the black disk. When I hooked up the camper I notice my truck definitely squated less. The towing ride was less bumpy. That is it. It definitely did not improve fuel mileage. I am still at 8.5 miles to the gallon. That is on flat ground, I live in Florida. Still could not go over 65mph without camper feeling loose on the road. 3 stars for now until I tow other trailers. It was an improvement but not as much as I was expecting. Still going to go truck shopping for a bigger truck to solve my towing needs. Side note: truck looks great and rides way better without a trailer in tow. 2/22 inf 744719

When you say that your camper feels loose on the road, it sounds like your trailer starts to sway at speeds above 65 mph. The best solution for keeping your trailer tracking straight while rolling down the road is to use a weight distribution system with sway control. A weight distribution system will not necessarily improve your fuel mileage, but it will improve your experience towing your 30ft trailer. I bought this based on I think the same product I bought several years ago for a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500. At that time, I bought a kit for for a Ram 2500 and was very impressed. I put a truck camper on the Dodge and I don’t think it settled an inch and when I drove it I hardly knew the camper was back there at all. No sway and no handling problems at all. This time I bought the kit for a Nissan Titan, pulling a 25’ travel trailer (about 7000#). The truck rear still settles and is not in a level attitude in transit without the weight distribution hitch. The suspension kit makes it better but not as much as I expected. 565780

2016 Ford F-150 XLT 4x2 - We would get a gallop when we would be towing our travel trailer and after reading several reviews for the Roadmaster Active Suspension System we decided to purchase the system. Just like most of the reviews it took more time to jack up the truck and remove the wheels then it was to install the system. It did raise the bed of the truck about an inch. Anyone who owns a late model F-150 will tell you that it rides just like a sedan. It was no different after the installation. I did take a short drive with the trailer attached and it was a smooth ride (no gallop). At this point I would consider this a success. The one thing that I would like to point out is if you have the same F-150 model that I have I would purchase RAS3611-B not RAS3611-Y. The “B” model has a block that covers the emergency brake bracket on the passenger side install. 754937

I did a lot of research to determine if I should use airbags or the RAS. For my application the RAS was the better choice. No matter who I asked, no one had a negative comment about this product (RAS). I tow a Jayco Travel Trailer (TT - 9000lbs) and while I have towed boats for years I was new to the type of tongue and hauling weight that the TT exerts on my vehicle. Installation was a breeze. I spent more time preparing my tools and finding my 22mm wrench than I did installing the RAS. There are many Youtube videos on how to install the RAS and I do recommend you watch them. My ride (F150 Echoboost) was smoother while pulling the trailer; however, I didn't feel any change to my daily driving (positive or negative). If you're using a WDH, I recommend these over the airbags. The airbags can be counter intuitive since the WDH should fix most of the weight distribution and level. The RAS works well with all WDH's and once installed you don't have to make any changes to it, unlike the airbags. Get the RAS - you'll be happy you did. 399233

Delivery was on time and the product was good and ready to go! Jacked up the truck put it on stands and 1hr 30mins later I was driving off for a test run. Works just like it says it would. No body roll, takes off so much smoother, and I did about 40 over those big rolling neighborhood speed bumps and it was super smooth. Before RAS it would have a real bouncy feel over the speed bump now it attack the bump if you know what I mean. As with many other reviewer's I researched several different brands and types of systems. The springs have helped out immensely with the tongue weight I have to pull with my F-150. I notice a 2 to 3 inch difference in the ride height with the springs on while towing approximately 1200 to 1400 pounds of tongue weight. RAS is still working great . I have to make a correction. Our trailer is 8005lbs empty and it is a pull behind not a fifth wheel. Tongue weight is about 900lbs with my motorcycle in the garage and the garage is in the front. When used in conjunction with my weight distributing hitch, my truck rides great and handles great.

It has helped in leveling out the truck/trailer so that less pressure is applied to the weight distribution system. Product is easy to install, I didn’t even need to take the tires off. According to the manufacturer, when the suspension system is adjusted, the vehicle must be raised with the axle hanging free. This releases most of the spring tension.
