Video Transcript for Kuat Truck Bed Bike Racks - Thru-Axle Mount - DRT20 Review

Today we'll be reviewing part number DRT20. This is the Kuat Dirtbag Bike Rack. This fork-mounted bike rack provides a simple option for carrying one bicycle. It's going to work only with bikes that have a 20mm through-axle front wheel skewer and it will accommodate bikes with standard or disk brakes. This versatile fork lock mounts to almost any flat surface, such as a truck bed, trailer or cargo carrier. The base has two holes for easy installation. The distance from center of center of each one of those holes is going to give us a measurement of 2 and 5/8 of an inch.

You're also going to get a drilling template that's included with a real life, or real size, illustration. That way you can mark the correct drill holes that you need to get this mounted correctly. No hardware is included, but in here it does say to use 3/8 of an inch bolts or screw with washers and lock washers. It's made from a sturdy steel construction with a black powder-coat finish that's going to ensure durability and rust-resistance. This is designed to fit most 20mm by 110mm through-axle forks. No additional accessories are needed to mount your bicycle to this.

It's designed to use your 20mm through-axle skewer. Let's go over a few measurements. The base is going to give us an overall width of 4 and 3/8 of an inch and overall depth of 1 and 3/4 of an inch. You see here that it has a nice slant to it so it's going to allow a little bit of better transportation for transporting your bicycle. The overall height is going to give us a measurement of 3 and 7/8 of an inch. This does have a carrying capacity of one bicycle. That's going to do it for today's review of part number DRT20.

This is the Kuat Dirtbag bike rack. .

Cheap alternative compared to having to buy a 9mm thru axle mount for the utili-track in my Nissan Frontier AND THEN having to buy an adapter for that! For under $10 I bought some parts from a local hardware store and made this mount fit the track. It's sturdy, and high quality.

by:

I bought this for my fat tire HIMIWAY ZEBRA E-BIKE
to mount to the rails in my 2018 Toyota Tundra.
The mount was sturdy.
After looking all over the internet this was the best I could find.
The issue I had with it is that the bike weighs 88lbs and it was difficult to get the front fork on the mount. But the bigger issue was the weight of the bike on the mount added allot of stress to the Tundra rail system to the point where it was flexing the front of the truck bed. I did not want to risk the potential damage to the truck through bumps and long hauls . I would definitely recommend this if you have a regular fat tire bike as it’s not as heavy and won’t stress the bed.

Disappointed. The Kuat Dirtbag works, and feels relatively solid once installed, but is about 2-3 mm shorter than my hub. That means while loading and unloading the fork doesn't sit nicely on the rack and inserting/removing the thru-axle can be quite challenging. I'd heard great things about Kuat's products, and all I can say is I'm glad this one isn't as overpriced as the rest of their lineup.

My Kuat DirtBag Bike Rack Application

Nice product

by:

This is perfect for custom applications. I used this mount on a piece of plywood that fits in the back of my SUV. Simple, basic, exactly what I was after.

by:

I have been using two of these for a year now to hold down two e-bikes on a flat rack. These are wide enough to use on ebikes with wide forks.

by:

Product looks great. Fits our Fat Tire ebikes great. But your template is for the smaller mount. No big deal but you should caution customers before they drill into anything.

by:

Easy. I made the coolest rack ever. I didn't want to drop $300 and have the the bikes so high up on the roof. I came across these and enough said. best ever. My 1978 VW couldn't be cooler. All my Bus friends are jealous. They dropped the $300-ish, and now want my rack. My son and I bike throughout CO. too cool.

Thank you for the product and excellent service.

I use this in the back of my truck to hold my mountain bike. See attached photo. Works great. Paint starting to chip off around the screw holes. Not a big deal.

by:

I purchased two of these fork mounts to carry my two ebikes on a rack attached to my truck hitch. The ebikes are Himiway Cruisers and have wider than normal fork spacing. These fit perfect for my Himiway Cruisers. I mounted these on a piece of angle iron, to get some space underneath for the brake calipers. Then mounted the angle iron to the rack.

The next issue was that I wanted two sets of skewers, I do not want to pull the skewer out of the axle every time I mount the bikes on the rack. This did not go as easy as expected. I ordered two EVO Quincy 177mm skewers on [online]. However these ended up being a bit too short. I then ordered a set of five Uxcell M5 x 190mm 304 Stainless Steel threaded rods on [online]. I took the ends off of the EVO skewers and attached them to the rods.
This whole setup gives me everything I wanted.

by:

These simple fork mounts worked great to convert my hitch mounted cargo carrier into a bike rack for my Jeep Wrangler. These lack the locking feature I like about my Yakima roof mounted bike rack since they just use your existing skewer to hold the bike. It's a minor inconvenience to remove the skewer from your wheel. Quality is good, shipping was fast and the etrailer.com price could not be beat. This option saved me hundreds of dollars over a hitch mounted multi bike rack.

by:

The bike rack was exactly as represented. We can now carry mountain bikes with the thru-axle setup easily and securely. The service was excellent and delivery was prompt. We need to buy a trailer hitch for another bike rack and will certainly use etrailer again.

by:

I used a few of these fork mount options to build a truck bed bike rack. They've been excellent and were easy to work with(also budget friendly.)

I found that the 100mm width worked well with some 3-d printed adapters I made to fit wider forks as well(that way I have more flexibility.)

Would highly recommend.

This is the front fork mount I needed for my Farley 6 fat bike. It seems very sturdy and I mounted it very easily onto a removable 2 x 6 I have in the back of my pickup truck with a topper on it. I opted for this economical style of mount vs. an external hitch mount to use in the winter to keep the bike enclosed while travelling to keep the dreaded salt spray off the bike. When I contacted etrailer and let them know I found the same mount cheaper at another website they immediately matched the other websites price which was all the incentive I needed to order it.

by:

The product was great. but the service was even greater! 2 days (and a 4th of July holiday) before transporting my expensive bikes in the bed of my truck, I realized my homemade rig wasn't going to cut it. Panic! I got online with etrailer and found a part I wanted at 7PM, but needed overnight delivery. Whew, I got the order in. But, oh wait - I get an email 10 minutes later that the part I asked for was backordered. Panic ^2. But the email from eTrailer said call us NOW and we have a possible solution. Yeah, right. So I call, and - they did! Talked to real humans and they set me up with a substitute part that did the job and I had it on my truck next day. Totally awesome. Real people rock. Thanks to eTrailer, I had my bikes with me in Idaho and Oregon and Washington where I had to play my music gigs. Love you guys, and thanks for being real people!

by:

Works great. I have a F-250 with a tool box in the bed. My axle racks are mount on the tool box lid. Well make.

Rating - Excellent

by:

I need to be able to transport my fat tire ebikes inside my truck bed with the tailgate up. They are well made and heavy duty enough for these heavy bikes.

by:

Great product for the price. I bolted the mount to a 2x4 using carriage bolts. Using the rig to haul my mountain bike inside my 4Runner. Using friction tie-downs in combination with the fork mount. Solid.

by:

I am using this as a base for an interior rack in my Jeep Renegade. This will be mounted to a 2x3 section of fiber board that will fit flat in the rear of the Renegade. The bike fork fits perfectly and this will be a great way to transport my bike safely and securely. The service from etrailer was great too with prompt order delivery and great packaging. I will use etrailer again in the future.

by:

The DRT15 works great for my through axle mountain bike. I mounted it to a plank, along with my other fork mounting systems, and can easily get the fork on the unit and axle reinserted in no time. Solidly built and well engineered.

by:

simple and effective, and does what it's supposed to; that's all anything should be. I screwed it to the front top of my truck bed using self tapping screws.

by:

Perfect size. Ordered simular item from Amazon and the size was not correct. etrailer shipped the correct item on the first try. A sturdy way to transport thru-axel mountain bikes.

by:

Great product for mounting a fat tire bike to a rack for transport.

by:

Installed bracket in pickup bed the same day it arrived and used it to pick up our two Trek bikes with quick release. Solid! Even the Trek technician was impressed. Said he’d recommend this product to others. Drove 100 miles home in stiff wind. Bikes were locked in solid.

by:

Great product. Heavy duty enough for my fat tire EBike. Mounted to a board in the bed of my truck. Just wish it came with skewers.
