Video Transcript for A Closer Look at the Extang E-Series Soft Tonneau Cover on a 2017 Ram 1500

Hi, this is Scott with etrailer, and today we're gonna take a look at and install the Extang soft folding tonneau cover for 2017 Ram 1500. If you're looking for an affordable, fairly easy to install tonneau cover for your truck, this one is gonna be the way to go. This one's pretty cool, the way it installs, there's no tools involved when you put this one on at all. Back here in the back, you're gonna have spring loaded clamps where you just pull down on it and release it, and then we can flip our cover forward. Now once we have it forward on both sides, we're gonna have a buckle. Once we buckle it in, we can pull on our strap to tension it up and we could do that on both sides, and that's gonna hold it in place.

If we want to have our bed open, say we're hauling something in the back, that's gonna be a good option for us to leave our cover in place and still be able to use our bed of our truck. One of the things I like about this design is you're gonna notice that there we don't have any rails permanently attached to the side of our truck here at all. So what that means with this being a toolless design, it's gonna be real easy to put on and take off of our truck. Now we can take it off, and you won't even be able to notice that there was a tonneau cover on this one. So that's really nice.

It's simple to just, everything stays together, all the clamps and all the hardware with it stays with the unit. You can take it off and put it up in the corner of your garage and you're good to go. Now what this tonneau cover is gonna do for you, it's gonna give you protection from the elements. Say you keep a lot of camping gear and stuff in the back of your truck, or you go shopping. Say you go shopping, you want to keep your stuff that you went shopping in the back and then end up going to another store.

This is gonna be nice 'cause you can leave your stuff in there, and people aren't gonna see what you have in the back. So it's gonna give you a little bit of added security. If you're looking for something that gives you a little more security, there are options out there that are a hard version. There are the canister style that roll up into a canister, and a lot of those have aluminum panels through the back that are gonna give you a lot more security. So you won't be able to cut into those.

But for something to start out with, a new tonneau cover, this is gonna be the way to go. To start our installation, we got our tonneau cover out of our box, and what we're gonna do is get it put in place on the back of our bed rails. If you look on this end, you can see where we have our straps. This is going to be our front. So we'll just bring this up the edge of our bed, kinda get it even on either side. Now with that, we can unbuckle our buckle, and we'll bring it back. We're gonna take a look at where everything's sitting, and what we decided to do for this one is get it pushed as far forward as we can towards the cab. That way it's gonna give enough room for the tailgate to close. On the back, we have little bumpers on our corners, and I'm gonna use these to help line up where the back of our tonneau cover is gonna land. So if we get those pretty close to the edge of our bed rails here, that's gonna be a good fit. Now we'll check the front as well on both sides and see how we like that. Get an idea where that's landing. As long as we look pretty even on both sides, that's what we're looking for. Now we're at that. Now we can close up our tailgate and make sure we're gonna be able to let that close. (tailgate slamming) And that'll work. Once we have it sitting right where we want it, we're gonna carefully fold it forward without moving anything. In the front of our tonneau cover, we're gonna have our clamp set up, and you're gonna have this edge that's gonna clamp underneath the bed rail and this will slide back and forth. So just slide this over to the edge of your bed, get it to go up into that place, and just take your knob, and just turn it until you get it nice and snug. Just hold it in place, try and keep it nice and straight, up and down, and it will take quite a few turns to get it there, but just be patient. And for now, we'll just leave it snug. On both sides, we're gonna have the secondary clamp. We're just gonna run that up till we get up to the metal part of our bed and just turn that down tight. We'll flip our cover back. And on this rail towards the back, we're gonna have these spring loaded clamps, and we'll just pop those out and get those to hang down. Now what these are gonna do is they're gonna be spring loaded. So you're gonna be able to pull this down and this is gonna grab right up under our rail on the rear. There's just gonna spring into place. So now when we close our cover, we will be able to pull this over. And clip it right underneath our bedrail, and we'll do that on both sides. With everything covered up, that'll do it for our install of our Extang tonneau cover for 2017 Ram 1500. I'm Scott with etrailer, thanks for watching.
