Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, and how they may affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

The pewag Servo RS self-tensioning tire chains are great all-purpose, winter weather chains. If you live in an area where you're likely to get periodic snow and ice, these chains are perfect because they're durable, easy to mount, and give you constant traction - and they're lightweight and compact, so they store in your vehicle nicely too. If you're more likely to see seriously icy conditions, you might want to get a chain with V-bar links that can bite into the ice you need to give you maximum traction.

These chains are among the easiest and fastest to install. Unlike other self-tensioning chains, the Servo RS have tensioning devices built into the side chains so there's no need to route additional tensioners when you install them. Just make a couple connections, move the button on the ratcheting device to "drive," and you'll be able to see the chains begin to tension. Because they self-tension more and self-center as you drive, these chains will give you a perfect fit, no matter the profile or wear pattern of your tire. Plus, you only have to get out of your vehicle one time - once they're installed, there's no need to drive forward, stop, and check their tension.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's user manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the side wall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Snow Chains

Installing these chains is simple.
  1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks.
  2. Slide the chain behind the tire and connect the ends of the cable, which will sit behind the tire.
  3. Connect the inner chain to the outer traction chain at the bottom of the tire using the large red hook, then activate the servo device to ratchet the chain tightly into place.
  4. Once all the connections are made, move the switch on the ratchet back to "drive." The rachet will tension the chains, then center and fully tighten them on your wheels as you drive forward, giving you a perfect fit.

Removing the chains is as quick and easy as putting them on. Just move the switch to "open," pull the cable to give the chains some slack, and disconnect.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

  • What is the Difference Between the pewag # PWRS76 and # PWRSV82?
The pewag Servo RS Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains - 1 Pair # PWRS76 and the # PWRSV82 are very similar tire chain models. They are both Class S compatible, include self-tensioners, and have plastic bumpers that provide rim protection during use. Also, as far as required wheel well clearance, both chains require a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well and at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle itself. I went ahead and...

  • Recommended Snow Tire Chains for a 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek
From my research your 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek has 225/55-17 size tires from the factory. If you have a different tire size let me know. I also checked out your owner's manual and it recommends not using tire chains unless you're required to. In the event you need to the manual states to use Class S chains and to install them on the front wheels. Since you're not planning to use them long term (or at all if you don't have to) I recommend going with basic ladder style chains, like part...

  • Recommended Snow Tire Chains for a 2017 Mini Countryman ES
If you have the standard size Mini wheels of 225/55-17 that come on most models, then I recommend the Pewag Servo RS Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains - 1 Pair # PWRS76 and have a link thickness of 3.2 mm. These are Class S rated chains which means they meet minimum clearance standard and you will need chains with that Class S rating for your vehicle. • Do Pewag Servo RS Tire Chains Fit 2018 Tesla Model 3 With 235/45-18 Tires
The Pewag Servo RS Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains # PWRS76 are a fit for size 235/45-18 tires, which are found on many models of 2018 Tesla Model 3. So as long as your Tesla does have that size tire, then these Pewag chains will fit. These are Class S chains with just a 3.2 mm link thickness which means optimal clearance for your Tesla. They are also supremely easy to install with their self-tightening system so you never have to struggle with loose chains, making them both convenient...

  • Recommended Tire Chains And Installation On 2004 Toyota Sienna
In your owners manual for your 2004 Toyota Sienna, the online manual states snow tires or chains are recommended when driving on snow or ice. It states to use SAE class S type radial tire chains except radial cable chains or V-bar type chains. You are to use them on the front tires and are given instructions to not use chains on the rear tires. This is according to page 468 of the online 2004 Toyota Sienna manual. For instance, for 215/65-16 tires, I recommend the 2004 Toyota Sienna...

  • Tire Chains Options for 2013 Ford Fusion with 235/50R17 Tires Would
The pewag Servo RS Tire Chains part # PWRS76 are a fit for the 235/50-17 tires on your 2013 Ford Fusion. That said, the owner's manual does not recommend using tire chains on any size other than 215/60-16 and only on the front axle. That said, if you are traveling through an area that requires them you don't have much else of a choice so you would just want to check for clearance before use and proceed with caution.

  • Is Self-Tensioning Mechanism a Weak Point on Servo RS Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains
I checked the reviews for the pewag Servo RS Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains part # PWRS76 and there were no mentions of the self-tensioning mechanism failing. This isn't really a new design either as a lot of snow tire chains now have integrated self-tensioning mechanisms. It's really not an issue for passenger vehicles on-road. If you get into the larger trucks using them off-road that is where you'd want to steer away from self-tensioning or tightening cams but for everything else you'll...
