Specs:

  • Fits: 14" - 18" tires (for exact sizes, see below)
  • Quantity: 2 chains
  • 90-Day warranty

Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/ESP functionality, consult your owner's manual.

These chains are outstanding in serious winter conditions because the V-bar studs can bust through intense ice and packed snow. So, you'll be able to get to work and back home again even in the toughest weather. You can also use them if you ever go off-roading and end up in a mud-digging situation. These chains are going to help give your vehicle purchase to pull out and keep moving.

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new snow chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. These will cause damage to your garage floor and paved driveway. If you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. These can cause damage to your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Snow Chains

Installing tire chains is easy.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks.

Cross chain connections should have the prongs facing away from the tire

2. Drape the chains over your tire, ensuring that the v-bar studs face away from the tire.

Connect chains on the back and front of the tire

3. On the back of the tire, pull the chain tight and hook the ends together. Repeat this on the front of the tire, then clamp the lever to fasten extra chain links and keep them from flapping as you drive.

Use tool to tighten cams on the sidewall chains

4. Insert the included tool into the cam and twist to tighten the sidewall chain. Twist as many cams as it takes to get a tight fit.

Rubber adjusters ensure a tight fit

5. Drive forward 2-3 vehicle lengths and recheck the chain tension. Tighten any loose cams. If needed, rubber adjusters (sold separately) can be used to get a tight fit. Make sure the hooks on the adjusters face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Video Transcript for Glacier V-Bar Snow Tire Chains Review

Adam: Hi, everyone. Adam, with etrailer.com. Today, we're going to be talking about the Glacier Chains V-Bar Snow Tire Chains. So this is going to be a ladder patterns chain. So we are going to have little gaps in between each of these here, but what really stands these out from most is the fact that they have a V-Bar right here. This is going to be one of your more aggressive if not the most aggressive type chain that you can have. This is going to be something for extremely deep snow, something with ice, or something like that.

It is not only just a twist link, they actually integrate these V-Bars on top of that. So just imagine what a twist link would do. If you ever use those before. Just add two spikes per link, this thing will literally tear up any of that ice you may hit whenever you're going down the road. All of it is made of a steel construction, and it will resist against rust and corrosion over time. One negative thing about these V-Bars is just the fact that we have these two really sharp edges on all of these.

That's what's going to be hitting the ground first. So you might see a little bit more wear compared to some of your just square link or twist link style chains. So, one thing that I noticed when I put these chains on is we have four different cam tensioners. Some of the other ones that I've messed with in the past only have about three. So, that's just going to give you that extra amount of adjustability. If you have two vehicles that have this similar size tire, we might be able to use them on both with all that adjustability.

So first thing you guys really need to do before buying your chains is just figure out what size tire that you have. If you don't know it off the top of your head, I know I don't. It's actually right here right next to your rim. So it's going to be a series of numbers, they're going to be about three, then a group of two numbers, and then an R, and then the size of your rim.So when you go on our website and you have your vehicle and the fit guide, you go on there and you can actually have options for different tire sizes. So just click that and you'll be ready to go for the specific tire that you're needing to chain up.

They do come in a pair of two. So if you plan on putting this on an all-wheel drive vehicle or a four-wheel drive vehicle, something like that, just be sure to check your owner's manual and make sure that you're able to do that on both of the tires.Usually it's going to be the same size for front and back, but just obviously check, but it is going to be the same exact installation process on both sides. But one thing that we do get a lot of questions about is sometimes when you're in a really aggressive situation, a lot of snow, a lot of ice, but then the road starts clearing up. What we really need to do when that road starts clearing up, because these V-Bars are extremely aggressive. You probably should take those off after a while, because they will wear down relatively quickly in light conditions. So whether the roads are clearing up and you need to take them off, or the roads are getting bad and you need to put them on, it is really easy to just put them on and off. So let's just go ahead and show you guys how. So the first thing we want to do is lay out our chains and just take a couple of things into account. One, we want to make sure there's no kinks in our links or anything like that. And two, we just want to make sure that these cams are going to be on the outside of our tire. So once we get all that squared away, just kind of grab it in the middle and we can go ahead, and drape it over our tire.We want to make sure it's nice and even, and also I want to make sure there's an even amount of slack on the right and left. Once that's good, we can go around back and make a connection. So we are going to have a hook over here and some spare links on my end. What we're going to do since this is the first time, I don't know exactly which link is going to be best, but once you guys put these on, you'll pretty much know.I'm just going to go with not the last one, but the second to last. And I do honestly suggest putting these on before you get into this situation where you're actually going to need them, just so you don't run into any roadblocks. So now we can go around front and make another connection. So we're going to have our spare links here and our tensioner. I'm going to try to find the best one for it. That one works, but we'll see if we can get it to the next one up. Probably not. So I'm just going to pick this one and loop it into itself here. We've got a spare link, just hanging there. And that's what that's for. We don't have a whole. We have a decent amount of slack, but now we're going to go ahead and actually tighten our cams. So luckily we do have a tool that comes with our kit. We don't have to grab that separately, which is a plus. And we can go ahead and start with the cam. I want to start with this one here. Pretty simple, a little better. We can do more.Getting there. All right, we are pretty close, but I'm just going to go ahead to see if I can get this one tightened down too. All right. So I tightened down all of them and we really do have a decent fit here, but we do suggest grabbing a rubber tensioner and hooking that up as well. So this is what your rubber tensioner is going to look like. We do carry these at etrailer, but they don't come with the kit. So be sure when you buy your chains, grab some of these. All we really need to pay attention is just the hook. Just make sure it just faces out away from our rim. And then of course just be as symmetrical as we can. Once we get that on there, I'll move that. We do suggest that you guys roll over them a couple of times, let them settle into your tire and then come back out, check them. And if you got the right amount of tightness, you're ready to hit the road. Well everyone, that's just about it for a look at the Glacier Chains V-Bar Snow Tire Chains.

These work like a charm on the Promaster. We have used them several times to get in and out of ski areas which had icey and deep snowy approaches or exits.
Cannot be driven at over about 15 mph-to be expected.

These tire chains for my 2017 GMC 2500 (20” wheels) perfectly. They did great in the snow and allowed me to pull an enclosed trailer to my cabin, which I couldn’t have done without these chains on my truck. Thanks etrailer for the fitment video specific to my truck! Very helpful

by: 02/22/2021

I ordered 2 sets (4 chains total) of these tire chains for my V10 F250, which I use to plow a private dirt driveway on the north side of a mountain in rural Pennsylvania. It's two miles (actual odometer reading) uphill to the paved road from my house. Most years, along about February, the road ices up (because no sun and midatlantic sleet issues) and plowing becomes quite challenging. I figured getting tire chains might help the traction-on-ice problem. I plow the road between 10 and 15 mph, with the truck in 4wd. Since buying the chains I have run the truck up and back the road approximately twenty times with the chains on, plowing from 4 to 8 inches of snow, conducting rollbacks of shoulder, chopping up slush, etc. I have also used the truck (with chains) to pull out two other stuck vehicles that had run into ditches. At this point I feel like I can review the product because I've used 'em enough to have an opinion. 1. These tire chains add a lot of traction on ice. A lot. Enough to plow with and enough to pull out stuck vehicles while the "tow" vehicle is sitting on ice. 2. The chains look fine and are undamaged at this juncture. Since I've used them consistently with how I expect them to be used and they are fine, I'm happy with quality at this point. 3. Maybe I will improve with practice, but it's about thirty minutes of twinking around to get these straightened out, on the truck, tightened up, bungee'd, etc. in a way that I feel OK about driving with them. (That's why 4 stars instead of 5.) Once they're on, they seem to stay put fairly effectively. I do not drive on paved roads with these chains nor do I drive faster than (max) 20 mph so I can't speak to how they might do under those circumstances. I use them for additional traction for my plow truck while plowing my iced-up dirt road... and for that, they work as advertised.

by:

Completely eliminated getting stuck. Plowing my place and down into the lower field the truck used to get stuck, just spinning on the ice, since installing the Vbar chains we are able to push the snow right down into the lower field without getting stuck

by:

These are really nice chains. I can usually get them all on with tensioners in about 10 minutes. Very simple to hook up. Another set of chains I have had used the so called "quick connect" with a huge piece that sticks out and causes concern for rubbing against brake lines and these do not have that and are way quicker to put on. I would definitely buy these chains again.

by:

I wanted rear-wheel chains for my 2011 Tacoma that would provide excellent traction. I already have V-bars on all four wheels of my ATV and it is impossible to get that thing stuck when I plow snow; so, I bought these. I have low-profile chains for the front wheels (to prevent from hitting the upper control arm) and with these rear-wheel V-bars, I really get the traction that I need. I drove around in a snow-covered field on the side of a hill and they work great! The cam tighteners are really convenient; but, I use rubber adjusters as a precaution. No stopping me now!

by:

In very happy with my new tire chains. The chains are well built and the quality shows.

by:

These are a complete waste of money. Bought them last year and only used them once, they seemed to work fine. I didn’t need them for the rest of the winter. This year, on their 3rd use the cam tightener tool broke, really cheap metal. On their 4th use (needing a screwdriver and wrench to tighten the cams) they completely fell apart. 3 cross links broke on one chain, plus the outside latch fell off. Other chain seems fine which I don’t understand. Bottom line is after 4 uses totaling less than 30 miles, these chains are toast and I feel like an idiot for having purchased them...

by:

These are great chains and easy to install. I haven't had to use them much. The Cam Tighteners are an essential feature. You put the chains on loosely, then use the cam tighteners to cinch them down. You should also buy some form of rubber chain tightener to pull then outer ring together as you drive. I used the star type. You don't want the chain to be loose and whack your wheel well. I have a Tahoe with AT tires and the spacing inside the wheel well is small. These chains worked well.

by:

These chains Broke 3 cross straps the 1st time I used them within 10 minutes of putting them on. I purchase 2 pairs I will be returning you're returning the pair that is in jacket and requesting a full refund for all. I even used the rubber chain tighteners on the outside of my wheels these chains wrapped around my rear axle and damaged my brake linesIf you are looking for heavy duty chains do not buy these

by:

This product was amazing it worked very well .
They are easy to install and they are easy to remove. they make plowing my driveway so much easier because I have a couple of low spots that fill with water and turn to ice and with these chains I have not gotten stuck would highly recommend them to anybody they also work well going down tote roads when I'm ice fishing. 5 Stars

by:

Had trouble getting out to get wood, a good amount of snow and ice underneath. Put on the chains and the old truck walked right through. We'll see how they hold up but I am very satisfied.

by:

They look and feel heavy duty. I haven't used them yet but I did install them to check for fit. Installation is a bit trickier than what's shown in the video. I found it easier to lay them behind the rear tire and back up over them for a short distance. I really like the cam tensioners you just have to twist as many as it takes to gain the correct tension over the tire.

by:

Excellent customer service from Phillip.

by:

Unfortunately the snow and ice missed us for a use review but fortunately we still have power because of that. These went on very easily and the cams worked great. Wear gloves the first time cause the edges of the cross links are still sharp. These went on the rear tires of my 2021 Trail Boss with LT265/60 R20

by:

these are nice heavy chains. however, i felt the workmanship was a bit under-par. the welds, especially on the twist links which form the cross-members were rough and when you add the galvinizing to that, they are difficult to lay out flat prior to installation. the rough welds hang-up and you have have to do some "creative twisting" to get all the links into proper position. this problem was only in a few places. but, i can foresee some frustration if i have to find those kinks in the snow and with numb fingers. i discovered the problem when i laid the chains out on my garage floor as i was inspecting the chains the day i received them. this is May and so i can't say how they will perform this coming winter. i expect they will do well, but chains, by nature, are a tangled mess when you first pull them out. it should not have to be an extra struggle do to rough surfaces.

by:

The learning curve for applying the tire chain was short, and in the end, the process took about 5 minutes. (It helped to drive the tire on to a brick first.) The galvanized links appear sturdy, as do the cams, and the chains seem tight enough. Intended use is road travel in snow/ice - more on that later, perhaps.

by:

I just received my tire chains today and have not yet tried them. I can't say enough how easy etrailer made them to order. Just go by vehicle and they show you the different chains that fit. I went to tire chain sites and they were difficult to choose the tire size and types. I bough these for my new Colorado in case I need them to get up my very steep driveway to my cabin if there is a lot of snow. I'm very sure these chains well help.

by:

Recently we got 12-14 inches of snow here in N.C. and put these chains on 1 day ahead of the snow.
Installation was very simple as especially since etrailer.com has the accompanying instruction video which was great. I couldn't believe how easy it was.
Then came the driving. We had ice first for a few hours and then the heavy snow.
I had a 14 mile round trip to make and here's what stopped me....NOTHING!
My truck drove on the snow and ice like a snow plow, never skidding, never sliding, and I was traveling about the recommended 30-35 mph., and even the steep country road hills made NO difference. My truck went up inclines and curves as if I was driving on dry pavement. The "V" bars on each link made all the difference, and I will never buy "regular" chains again.
Hats off to Glacier chains for ruggedly, well built chains that not only hold up and work well, but work better than I ever expected.
Kirk

Easy to put on and they tear through the deep snow of the Colorado mountain trails. Great tire chain.

by:

Excellent traction for my plow truck, very aggressive, needed chain tighteners but overall great.
