Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if they might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

These pewag ladder-patterned chains are great winter weather chains for your vehicle. Not only do the grooved square links dig into deep snow and ice better than rounded or standard square links, but the reversible design of these chains also allows them to wear under standard use much longer than other chains. And if you're partial to American-made products, you'll be happy to know that these are made in Colorado.

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. These chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Snow Chains

Installing these chains is simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks.

Drape chains over tire.

2. Drape the chains over your tires, making sure that the prongs attaching the cross chains to the side chains face away from your sidewalls. Drive forward about half a tire rotation.

Connect the chain behind the tire

3. On the back of the tire, pull the chain tight and hook the ends together. Repeat this on the front of the tire.

Install rubber adjusters

If needed, rubber adjusters (sold separately) can be used to get a tight fit. Make sure the hooks on the adjusters face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

the chains came the other day but it has been so cold that I haven't tried them to make sure these do fit.going to be warmer this week so I will try them on.

by:

Just got chains, came when said they would. Put them on they fit fine and got good traction. First set of chains I have ordered for a pickup. They a little lighter weight than I expected. But other chains i have used have been on farm equipment and were made from heaver material. I wouldn't purchase anything lighter weight or cheaper than these unless your using them solely for on road use. On a 2018 Silverado 1500 18" wheels pickup the chains fit well, but you definitely need the chain tightening bunge or the chains do hit the fenders on the rear. Not the chains fault, just GM should have left more space between the rear wheels and the fenders.

Have had these for less than a year and they're already cracked and rough-looking. Hoping this is just aesthetic but I'm afraid they're going to fail soon!

by:

great product and a great web site they have what you need for towing and more

by:

Awesome chains, made in the U.S.A. no cheap import/sub-par chinese garbage. No need to say more.. Buy American

by:

Just received them and test fitted them on my Falken Wildpeak AT3W 275/65R18 backtires. It was a tight fit, but they made it, plus the tires are brand new. Havent used them yet, but they seem well made.

  • How To Secure Extra Chain Links With Pewag Tire Chains PWE2228S On 2024 Toyota 4Runner
Hey Bob, thanks for reaching out. The pewag Tire Chains # PWE2228S will fit the 245/60-20 tires on your 4Runner but they do not have a mechanism for securing any extra chain links. You definitely don't want extra links flying around while you drive and there are two ways to deal with this. You can either secure the unused portion of the chain with a wire tie or zip tie, or you can just cut off the extra links. What I would do is test fit the chains in your driveway and leave an extra link...

  • Recommended Snow Chains for a 2021 Jeep Gladiator w/ 265/70 R17 Tires
For your 265/70 R17 on your 2021 Jeep Gladiator, I recommend the Pewag Tire Chains item # PWE2228S. These heavy duty square-link chains are reversible. Square link chains provide the best traction in deep snow and since these are reversible they will last a long time. I have linked a review video below along with a couple of pictures so you can see what these chains look like when installed on a Jeep Gladiator.

  • What is the Difference Between the Pewag # PWE3227S and # PWE2228S For My Ram Tire Size 265/70R17?
Hello Dustin, Great question, the main difference between the two is the chain thickness. The # PWE3227S are 7 mm, and the # PWE2228S are 5.6 mm. This means that because the # PWE3227S are a little thicker it might result in a little bit of a rougher ride but in return will give you better traction in the harsh elements. Let's face it, no one really wants to put chains on their vehicle and both of them are going to give you a rougher ride, so why not go with the option that is going to...

  • What Does the Class S Designation Mean for Snow Chains
Tire chains that have the Class S designation are designed for use on vehicles with restricted wheel well clearance. Some newer cars, vans and small trucks, especially those with large, aftermarket tires, may require the use of Class S chains. Class S chains will fit your tires provided there is both: A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle itself (see image) Not...

  • Tire Chain Recommendation for 255/80-17 Tires on 2015 Ram 3500 Dually
Konig doesn't offer chains that would fit the 255/80-17 tire size, but we do have other choices. Ram does state in the owner's manual that it's acceptable to use chains on both the front and rear wheels of the 3500 dually models, but they go on to say that you should use the same type/style chains on the front and rear axle to prevent handling problems. I'd recommend the Pewag # PWE4228SC for the duals on the rear axle, and if you wish to use chains on the front axle, use # PWE2228S....

If you are purchasing the chains for emergency use only, and they will sit in your tool box more often than not, an inexpensive set of chains like the Glacier Chains # PWH2228SC would be a good choice. The chains are constructed of low-carbon steel and offer a 90 day warranty. If you consistently find yourself in situations where chains are needed, you would want something more durable like the Pewag # PWE2228S. These chains are constructed of corrosion-resistant nickel manganese alloy...

The Pewag All Square Reversible Snow Tire Chains # PWE2228SC that you referenced are an excellent choice for on-road use but since you are intending to use these off-road as well you will be better off using chains # PWE2228S. These also are reversible all-square chains. You can use rubber adjusters # TCMA2. I suggest you check your vehicle owner's manual to confirm...

  • Tire Chains for 275/50-21 Tires on a 2016 Lexus LX 570
The 275/50-21 tires that you have on your 2016 Lexus LX 570 are a very odd and uncommon tire size so the availability of tire chains that will fit them is limited. I spoke to my contact at Pewag and they stated that the Pewag All Square Snow Tire Chains part # PWE2228S should work for you but they have not had a chance to test them on this size. Hello David. For diamond pattern tire chains for your 2000 Dodge Ram 2500 and 265/75R16 tires I recommend the Thule XB16 chains # TH01571265. For your tire size this is the only option that has the diamond pattern and can be used on or off road. But if you want something that is going to give you the best grip in snow, ice, and even mud then I recommend the Pewag tire chains # PWE2228S. These chains have large square links which provide the best grip making them ideal for extreme environments....

The Titan Chain Alloy Snow Tire Chains # TC2321 are made in China. If you're looking for a USA made tire chain you could use something like the pewag Tire Chains # PWE2228S. • Driving Speed and Snow Chain Lifespan When Used on 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD 4x4

Driving faster than this increases the risk of damaging and/or dislodging the chains, which could lead to damage to your vehicle and/or personal injury to you or other motorists. No tire chain product allows for normal driving speed in snowy or icy conditions. The rate and degree of wear on any given snow chain is a function of many factors, including but not...

We do have tensioners but they are not required but recommended for Pewag chains # PWE2228S. Since the chains you referenced are for 15 to 20 inch tires, you would use rubber adjusters # PW99. The chains themselves do not have any levers or cams to tension the chains.
