Hey, it's Ethan here at etrailer. Today we're gonna be taking a look at showing you how to install these Pewag studded truck chains on our 2023 Chevrolet Suburban. This is gonna be on a tire size 265-65-18. Make sure you check the fit guide at etrailer.com so you get the right chains for your tire. These chains are some of the most aggressive chains that you can buy. They are for off-road use only, so if you are looking for something on road, check out some of the other options that Pewag offers.
These are going to have seven millimeter studs that are gonna be used primarily for forestry, ice road trucking, things like that. We have them on the rear axle, in our case, as per the owner's manual for the Suburban, but always double check your owner's manual to make sure you're getting enough chains on the right axle for your car. The chains have a ladder pattern design, which means they go straight across the tire, so they're gonna be really helpful for starting, stopping, overcoming getting stuck in those situations, as well as, you can see like I mentioned before, they have the seven millimeter studs that go all the way across that are gonna be super aggressive and gonna do a great job biting into that snow, mud, ice, anything that you throw at 'em. Chains are twist links and they're made of a premium alloy construction, so they're gonna be durable and hold up to rust, weather, corrosion, better than a low carbon steel would. The chains are tensioned well because there are three cam tighteners that are featured on the outside to twist to get the tension into the chains.
The chains do come two to a set in this really lightweight sort of plasticy canvas type bag. As you can see on ours, we actually already have a nice rip in the side, especially with these bars, with these studs. They're way too aggressive for a bag this light. They're gonna be poking through and causing problems in no time, so if you do get these chains, we recommend picking up some kind of plastic tote, something that's gonna be more helpful in keeping the chains from tearing up whatever you're keeping 'em in and keeping the chains secure at the same time. Installing the chains is pretty straightforward.
You will have to get under and around your tire to get the back connection, so we always recommend practicing it in your garage beforehand or somewhere so that you know how the chains go before you find yourself stuck in the situation that you need 'em, trying to figure it out. But you can check out how we installed them right now. First thing we want to do is lay our chains out flat, making sure that nothing is caught or twisted or tangled. We also wanna make sure that these cams are on the side facing us. We wanna make sure that the chains are facing the right way.
Normally, we can tell if the chains are facing the right way based on these hoops and the flat side being on the tread, but with these chains, it's pretty easy to tell. Obviously, you don't want the studs here facing onto the tread of your tire. So if we have them facing up right now, then they're in the right way. Once we have them centered up, we can drape them over our tire, starting by grabbing a couple of these connections towards the end and carefully moving these on and around, trying to avoid the studs making contact with any of the paint or the exterior of our vehicle. They will scratch it up fairly quickly and fairly easily. But once we have the chains as even as we can front to back and side to side, we can go around and make our first connection on the back. We want to fit these loose links into this hook on the other side. So we'll go with the. Actually, we'll go with the furthest one in our case, 'cause we have those cams to tighten things up, but we can come back and adjust that if we need to. Our connection on the front is exactly the same as on the back, turning this loose link into, or these loose links on the side into the hook on the other side. Go for the second one, in our case, and then we'll tighten things up. Using this provided lever tool, we will rotate the cams by sticking it in and turning them counterclockwise. In our case, we'll probably need at least a couple of them. We've got all of them, so there are three. We'll tighten all those down, and you can see that gave us a really nice snug fit. Even though we do have the cams to tighten things down, there's still no self-tensioning built into the chains, so if you bump along, especially with some aggressive chains like these, they'll probably shift around a little bit, so we wanna make sure that we pick up one of these rubber tensioners, and you put it on similar to how you would put a tire on or take it off, following a star-shaped pattern, trying to get as much coverage as you can, again, for when you're bumping over things or when chains shift during turns. The rubber tensioner will help keep the chains in place. Once you have the tensioner on, get the chains installed on the passenger side tire as well. Roll forward it backwards a few times to make sure that everything is in place, and then you're ready to go. This was just a look at how these Pewag twist link studded truck chains fit on our 2023 Chevrolet Suburban.
These tire chains are great! I work in construction and we had a semi with trusses get stuck on the ice. I installed these chains on all 4 tires and was able to pull the semi up the icy incline.
I haven't had to use them yet so can't really rate them
Just got them, will get back to you, when I get a chance to actually try them out, and give you a rating based on how well they work.
