Swapping from older drum brakes to these 13" Kodiak disc brakes delivers a big jump in stopping power and control. The one-piece hub-and-rotor assembly keeps things running true and helps prevent uneven wear. Ceramic pads and a large 2-1/2" stainless steel piston respond fast and give consistent braking with less fade. Each kit handles a 7,000-lb axle and uses an 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern with 9/16" wheel bolts for solid compatibility.
Saltwater is hard on trailer brakes, but this setup is made for it. The Dacromet finish on the hub-rotors and brackets holds up to 300–400 hours of continuous salt spray, and the stainless steel calipers are completely rustproof. That combo means you can tow near the coast or launch in saltwater without worrying about corrosion eating through your gear.

Heat buildup can shorten pad life and cause fade, but the vented rotor design pushes air through the core to cool faster during stops. Kodiak’s side-support mounting bracket also takes the weight off the bolts, reducing wear and keeping performance consistent mile after mile.

These brakes skip the extra springs, shoes, and magnets found in drum systems, so there’s less to maintain over time. When pads eventually wear down, they’re easy to reach—just remove the caliper on the outside of the assembly instead of tearing everything apart. With fewer parts to service and everything needed for one axle included—bearings, races, oil seals, oil caps, synthetic bearing oil, wheel bolts, and lug nuts—this kit saves both time and effort while staying ready for the next trip.

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this Kodiak 13 inch Hub and Rotor Disc Brake Assembly Set. This is going to allow you to upgrade your trailer from drum brakes to disc brakes, so that you can take advantage of the superior performance that comes along with having disc brakes on your trailer. Or if you already have disc brakes and you're wanting to upgrade to a higher quality finish on your brakes so you don't have to keep replacing them every couple of years, this is gonna be a great set for you as well. These do have a dichromate finish on the hub and rotors, as well as on the mounting brackets, that's gonna offer an excellent rust and corrosion resistance. It's got a 300 to 400 hour salt spray rating and so it will hold up really well for you.
And then our calipers are a stainless steel construction, so they are obviously gonna be rustproof. So this is gonna be an excellent option for your salt water boat trailers, or really any trailer that's gonna be in corrosive environments, heavily salted roads, that sort of thing on a frequent basis. This is gonna hold up really well for you. So if you are wanting to upgrade the finish, this is gonna be a great set for that as well. Now making sure that this is gonna work for your application, having the two assemblies here is going to allow you to upgrade a single 7,000 pound capacity axle with the number 42 spindles.
Our rotors are 13 inches in diameter, and as you can see, we have eight of these nine 16th inch diameter wheel bolts in the eight on six and a half inch bolt pattern. So these are gonna work for your wheels that are 16 inches and larger. And then again, if you are wanting to upgrade from your drum breaks to disc brakes, these are going to offer excellent performance for you. It's gonna be a dramatic difference between your drum breaks to the disc brakes here. These do use ceramic brake pads that will help to increase your stopping power, so it's going to dramatically shorten your stopping distance.
We also have a large two and a half inch diameter stainless steel piston that provides fast, responsive braking. So it is gonna provide smoother, more controlled braking than you're probably used to with your drum brakes. It's gonna help keep your trailer from pushing and pulling, so definitely an improvement in performance. And then, in addition to better performance, these are also going to require less maintenance. So it is gonna help save you time and money over the long run.
Having the one piece hub and rotor assembly reduces the chance of uneven rotor wear. And then if we move to the side here, you can see we do have this vented design that's gonna help dissipate your heat faster to prevent premature brake pad wear. Now, the brake pads will wear down over time. They will need to be replaced, but that's a pretty straightforward process, and those are really the only components that are gonna need to be replaced. The rest of these are a very high quality automotive grade construction, so this is gonna be very long lasting for you, not like your drum breaks that have all those small springs and other components that have to be maintained and/or replaced. So it is gonna help save you time and money over the long run. Now, the one caveat if you are switching from drum brakes to disc brakes, is that disc brakes do require a higher line pressure than your drum brakes. So you're gonna need to make sure that you've got a hydraulic brake actuator and break lines that are rated for 1500 psi or higher in order to activate your disc brakes here. And that's gonna be kind of rare for your trailers that are currently set up for drum brakes. So might take some doing to get everything switched over. If you don't already have hydraulic brake actuator and brake lines ready for that 1500 psi, we do have those available here at etrailer.com. Obviously, they're not included in this kit, so this isn't gonna give you everything that you need, but it is going to give you the two dichromate plated cast iron hub and rotor assemblies, with the eight pre-installed nine 16th inch diameter wheel bolts on each one. We're also going to get 16 of these nine 16th inch stainless steel lug nuts to hold your wheel in place. We've got our two stainless steel calipers here, as well as our two dichromate plated ductile iron caliper mounting brackets on the backside here. You can see these do have the five bolt brake flinch configuration, so it is gonna be very easy to get mounted onto your axle. I do wanna point out that I've got these mounted on top just for display purposes for balance, but when you actually go to install them, they're gonna be mounted on the side. That side support design puts all the weight on the mounting brackets instead of on your bolts so it helps your bolts last longer. You are gonna get four of these stainless steel caliper mounting bolts, two for each assembly here. And we also have our inner and our outer races that are pre-installed. We also get the inner and outer bearings that will fit into those races. I have to make sure that everything is rotating smoothly there. This system is lubricated with oil, so we are going to get our two oil seals for the inside and our two oil caps for the outside. We're also going to get one eight ounce bottle of synthetic bearing oil to make sure that everything is staying well lubricated in there and moving around like it should. So overall, like I said, whether you're wanting to upgrade for performance or for better quality finish so that you're not having to replace the break assemblies every few years, this is gonna be a great set for you. That completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching.
