Hello neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer, and today we're taking a look at the Sumo Spring Front Custom Helper Springs for a Front Coiled Suspension. Now, this is gonna be available for a bunch of different vehicles, whether it be a truck, SUV, or van, like we have here today. Now, you're gonna want to make sure to use our fit guide on etrailer.com to make sure that you're getting the proper Helper Springs for your vehicle. Now, the way that these work is actually creating a nice little, progressive cushion barrier for those coils. So, instead of the spring just compressing down, it gives it a little bit more of a fight, but it's also nice and soft, that way, it's still giving you compression, so it's not gonna be a harsh ride. And in fact, it should settle it out quite a bit.
And if your front is loaded down this is a great way to kind of bump that back up, to get at riding level, and it's just gonna make driving a lot more comfortable, and a little bit more short footed. Some typical applications would be, a minivan that is loaded down with the family and maybe some accessories on the roof or in the back. Whatever it may be, if it's fully loaded, your suspension is having to work a little bit harder. And the great part about this is, is it pops in place, there's no maintenance required and it's gonna keep up with the heat. Any oil or chemicals that you might find on the road, it's not gonna break down.
So once it's in place, you're gonna get that added comfortable driving, whether you're loaded or not. Now, it's not gonna bump up your weight capacity per say, so, you're not gonna be able to hold more on your vehicle, but what it's gonna do is actually give your suspension the most bang for buck to fight against that load. So it's really gonna let it work a little bit easier as it kind of supports it. So, that's a great way to enhance your suspension without having to completely change your suspension. Now, obviously we have a minivan here today, but they're all gonna install about the same.
And this is really gonna be great for guys that have those front hitches with snow plows or just any front storage of the vehicle with weight up front. Even heavy brush guards can really weigh down the front and just take away a nice, smooth driving experience, and it's gonna be kind of a rougher ride just having that weight already compressing it. So, this just takes that constant pressure on those Springs and just kind of makes it a little bit more supple, and it can handle that weight quite a bit better. Now we're out on our test course and this is gonna give us a good baseline of how it is stock and that way you can really see the difference once they're actually installed. As a lot of suspension components are, you really can't tell a quantifiable difference as far as measuring it, but it really comes down to the way that it feels.
So, I'm gonna kind of get my first impressions here, and we'll see how it improves. So we're gonna start by hitting some bumps here, kinda simulate some rough road or just kinda uneven services back and forth here, kinda get the suspension to work. Then we're gonna come up to a slalom. So, we're gonna actually see that suspension as we go side to side and some of the sway that's involved with that. And that's kind of where these can come into play, is it's not necessarily gonna reduce the sway a ton but it's gonna give those Springs a chance to kinda fight back without just compressing down. And having that little bit of dampening there, should make it a lot more responsive, especially, when the van is loaded up, it's gonna make a world of difference. With our Helper Springs installed, we're gonna go back on that same test course and kind of run it through the same test, just to see the difference. So hitting the bumps first. Immediately, I can tell already that the suspension just seems a little bit heavier duty in a good way. It's just handling it kinda a little bit more graceful. It doesn't feel like the shock is really getting a huge workout. It feels tougher, absolutely out the gate. I'm not loaded up right now, so, it's really not gonna really shine until you have it loaded up, but immediately even without weight, it's already made a big difference. So, even in the slalom here, back and forth, it's making this minivan feel a lot sportier. So, I'm pretty impressed. For a really quick install, this is a great way to get a lot better handling and just overall better suspension feel, and be able to support heavier loads on your vehicle. Now, this is what it's gonna look like before you install it, and you can see it's got a slit here. And these grooves look almost identical, but we actually have one that's deeper. So, the deeper one is gonna sit on the bottom of the spring and you're gonna want this on the top. Now, installation is gonna be about the same for pretty much every vehicle. We're doing it on this van here, but really you're just gonna want to jack up the front suspension, and that way that suspension hangs down. So, make sure you have your emergency brake on. You might wanna chuck your rear wheels and then also jack it up from here and put a jack stand under there just to be safe. But once that tire stops dropping, you know that you've fully extended that spring out, it's gonna make it a lot easier to get this in. You'll see a lot of dust on these which is kind of normal for a car that's driven quite often. So, what I'm gonna do is just with a soapy water solution, just spray all of this down. And that's twofold, not only to make sure that it's a nice clean surface we're putting it on, but it's also gonna help kind of lubricate it to get it placed on for its installation. So, once we spray that down, just go through wipe down those coils and try to give it the best smooth surface to actually hop onto it. Now, once you have that surface clean, again, take that deeper groove, and that's gonna go on the bottom here. And we're looking to get it in the second or third kinda gap in between the coils. But really for first initial, whatever kind of works best. So, the fact that this is kind of open, that's gonna work well. We can always move this up. So, what I will do actually is start with one edge, kind of wrap it around here and we'll put our groove in. Now, at this point, it's gonna be kind of tight here, but I'm just gonna kind of really press this in to get that leading edge in. So, once that's in, what you can do is actually rotate this a little bit and then just kind of work your way. And you can see that soap water really helping to be able to move this. And now that I have it in place, I'm just gonna make sure that I have it set up exactly where I wanted on the Springs. So, I'm gonna rotate it right about here. Some of the kits actually come with zip ties. And you can see there's a hole here, and you would just simply run that zip tie through and then kind of zip it around the coil. And I guess the thought process would be to keep it to where it's not gonna move, but honestly, once this spring is compressed it's gonna have enough pressure. And seeing how much pressure it took to get in there, I don't think they're really necessary. But if your kit comes with them, you might wanna run those through, and that way you have a little bit more peace of mind knowing that they're not gonna rotate down. If you own an ascent, you need these. The stock suspension is not good enough for a car that size, even more if you pack it full for a trip. After I installed sumo springs on the front and rear, the car drives 300% better. Breaking performance has increased drastically as well as daily driving and going over bumpy surfaces. The back end does still sag a bit more than I would like when loaded, but these definitely work and are worth the money to try before different springs.
I have traveled over 10,000 miles and feel that Sumo Springs for the front axles have been a great addition to my 2014 Winnebago Trend. I also added the Sumo Springs to the rear and new shocks. The ride and stability is much better with all these improvements. I would recommend all these products
I installed the Sumo Springs , front and back, on my 2022 Promaster van before I started my camper conversion. Sumo springs are alimony a must on a build to reduce sway and assist with the constant load in the back of the van. I purchased them from etrailer because of their outstanding customer service
Thank you for the follow up. This product was probably designed for an older generation of coil springs. So, it did not fit my vehicule and was a complete waiste of money. Sorry about the news. Regards.
Shipping was fast and packaged well. The material looks and feels durable and easy to install but is a little loose on the springs, and not as snug as I thought. Although once I did a test drive around the neighborhood it tighten itself on the coil springs and hope it stays that way!
2009 GMC Sierra CC 2WD
It does take some time and sweat equity to install. I think some may have a harder time if both tires are not off the ground at once. Lifting only one side, the front sway bar may transfer some of that compression to the tire in the air possibly causing that spring to have less room between coils.
They work as advertised however may need not be for everyone. I like how I can take corners at higher speed as if it is on rails (I also have the rear sumos). No nosedive during emergency stops. Not too intrusive when driving on smooth pavement but over rough or broken road can be tiresome over time. I guess they took a little more "spring" out then I was hoping for.
I am considering taking them out and installing a larger front sway bar.
These seem to make a big difference on the sagging front end of my '08 Ram 1500. Tip: Use LOTS of dish soap and install on a warm, sunny day. My first attempt at installation was on a cold day and the springs were inflexible and would NOT go on. They went on easily when warm.
They aren’t thick enough to make a difference between coils when loaded.
Install was a breeze, and the ride is a lot better, can’t wait to put some weight in it

I did not remove the front tire as I add more than enough room to slide them in. Quick and easy install. The front did not need to be trimmed.
Actually used these on the rear coil overs on our 2008 expedition for a little extra help while pulling our camper. Definitely helped level things out. Simple and great product.
I put these on all four wheels of my small SUV. Previously when it was loaded up for Overlanding and camping trips if I hit a bump or dip,it would bottom out on the shocks. Now they perform really well in those situations. When the car is not loaded up with gear, it performs as it would without the sumo springs. The ride is not stiff. Occasionally, I hear squeaking of the plastic material when the wheels articulate low speed on steep angles as it rubs against the shocks. After a year of use, I am glad I installed these overload devices. I think they have greatly extended the load range of my vehicle and the durability of the shock absorbers.
Install went fairly easy once I figured out the best spot to put the jack to lift the van. Really helped to have an oil filter wrench to get the old springs off the back. Took it out for a drive after an much better cornering and much less effect from wind and 18-wheelers. This was on a fairly windy day. No big difference in softness of the ride.
10 minute install significant improveme nt
I was very excited about these for my 4x4 2015 Nissan Frontier. I am not completely displeased with them because they do make a mild difference over bumps, but they aren't worth over 100 bucks no way, the fact that I had to CUT THEM to fit due to them being too long made me feel like the company does not due their research when manufacturing them. It was so long that it lapped the beginning on it, so in order to have them installed as shown on the instructions I had to cut nearly 3 inches off... Which meant I had to comely install them, mark then uninstall, cut to fit, then install again. For an item to cost this much I expected better build quality.
Bang for buck it's not worth it, it's overpriced and I wouldn't recommend them for that cost.

For right now it works
I am working with a 2025 Pleasure Way nature 2.2 class B on the Ford Transit chasis. We were experiencing a very rough ride in our RV. Pleasure Way had already installed the SuperSprings helper springs on the back leaf springs. This RV is rated for 11,000 pounds gross weight. We are currently almost 900 pounds below that weight fully loaded. This is probably as heavy as we ever will be loaded and about as light as we will ever weigh.l
I installed the SSR-121-47 SuperSprings in the back to reduce the jumping and slamming we were experiencing while driving and hitting rough spots, potholes and open joints at bridge junctions on the highway. I had to remove the back dually wheels to have adequate access to remove the original bump stops and install these springs.
Next, I installed the Coil SumoSprings CSS-1195 on the front coil springs per instructions. These were easy to install and we finished installing these coil helper springs in about 25 minutes including the setup time to gather the jacks, jack stands, soapy water, etc..
RESULTS:
My wife and I then took a ride to test the results and Oh My!!! What a difference. The jumping and hard slamming in the back suspension smoothed out and became as docile as our Lexus RX 350 car. I took my brother and nephew on a ride before I ordered the SuperSprings for the front and back and my nephew who sat in the back of my RV said the suspension action almost tossed him off the sofa when hitting small defects in the road.
The van tracked so much better. It had been moving left to right even when there was no wind. It was flat in corners and the steering felt firm, not soft and mushy like before. It was so back that the van would drift to the third land when I changed lanes. My wife is so happy. The cab is so much quieter and it is easier for us to have a conversation now. Before, we had to be facing one another and shout to each other in order to be heard.
I had considered upgrading the front struts and back shocks and adding a steering stabilizer to correct the wandering all over the road. The van was hard to handle in speeds above 60 MPH from new to now, 3,700 miles on the van.
We are very happy. We installed upgraded bump stops on our 2019 Sprinter chasis for our 2021 Dynamax Isata 3 24FW and got similar results.
I strongly recommend these products for the Ford Transit 350 HD to provide a more comfortable, controlled ride and reduce white knuckle driving!
Went on a little hard but once started not to bad. Haven't tried yet to tow with them.
I ordered these for my RAM Promaster 3500 because I had heard from fellow owners that they are a worthwhile addition, for increased stability on the road. The instructions are good, and they weren’t too hard to install myself. They are kind of expensive for a couple of rings of dense foam/plastic, but I guess they must be petty heavy duty. I look forward to my next trip to see how they perform.

Bought these for the front of my 2019 Honda Ridgeline. They did not fit at all, too small. However they went on the back ok so that’s where they are. Ordered another pair for the front. Fit them with another on line service. Hope they fit.
Installed these sumo spring spacers in our 2023 Promaster/ Roadtrek conversion van three weeks ago and just returned from a two week 2000 mile road trip with my wife. These spring spacers made an unbelievable improvement in general handling and highway speed handling around semi's, on and off ramps stability, cornering at intersections and dealing with crosswind conditions on the road. They were less and a $200 investment and they were great decision. While they were a little hard to insert into the springs, after watching several installation videos and soaping them up good after lifting each corner of the van, I was able to get them inserted in the springs and adjust them on the coil to where I wanted them at mid coil height. Great product!
