SmartPlug vs. Twist Lock
RV and boat owners have long relied on Twist Lock style connections for powering their rides. For years, it has been the best option for connecting to shore power. It's been reliable, but most know it's not without disadvantages:
SmartPlug's connector addresses each of these concerns and does all of the heavy lifting.
Locking arms grab the inlet, a clamp inside the plug body holds the cord, the inlet cap snaps to the top while in use, and the integrated seals weatherproof the connection. This helps prevent the wiggly, dirty connections that increase electrical resistance, which creates potentially dangerous heat.
Since it uses a square plug face, SmartPlug is able to use flat pins which create far more surface contact, further reducing the risk of high heat and electrical arcing. The square shape and flat pins also make it easy to plug in - no more twisting or guessing if the pins are lined up correctly.

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this SmartPlug 50 amp power connector and black inlet conversion kit. This kit is going to provide everything that you're gonna need to upgrade your 50 amp, 125 volt or 250 volt RV setup from your traditional twist type plug to take advantage of all the benefits of the smart plug system. Your inlet is going to have the same mounting holes as your twist type holes. So it's gonna be very easy to get this plugged in. They do have color-coded knobs on the backside here to help you get that wired properly.
They do include instructions with pictures to help you get that all wired in place and mounted up on your RV so that you can very easily plug your connector in. Your connector is going to wire to your existing power cords and you will have to cut off the twist type connector that is currently on there. Again, the instructions will walk you through that step by step. So very easy to get this wired in place of the connector that you currently have on your cord. And then once everything is installed, you would be very surprised and pleased with how easy it is to use the smart plug system.
And it's got lots of benefits, including that the shape here only fits in the one way. So if you get to your campsite late at night, it's dark and you can't see what you're doing rather than having to figure out which direction to plug it in. It only fits the one way, so it's very easy to get that plugged in. The sleeve design is going to ensure that the weight of your plug and cord is taken off of the electrical pins. It's gonna be beared by that sleeve design.
So it's gonna fit right in. It does also have the multi-point locking system. So the lid will come down once you are connected to provide a little bit-- but the main lock-in is these two stainless steel tabs here that will-- well, it's a lock in place, so it's gonna be nice and firmly connected. So you don't have to worry about disconnecting it if you we're to trip over it or something like that. It's going to bear that weight so that it's not being put on those pins and causing them to wiggle, loose or become disconnected.
Those pins are a straight nickel plated brass. So they are going to have a lot more connection for your electrical transfer. It's going to provide about 20 times more contact than your curved system design. So that's going to create less resistance, less heat. So it's gonna flow through there much more efficiently for you. The inlet cap will close down over the inlet of course when you're not using it to help to prevent any water debris from getting in there. But we do have a triple weatherproof seal even on our plugs. So when it's all plugged in, it's gonna be a very weather tight. You're not gonna have to worry about that. They do include the screws to get your electrical components mounted in place there as well as different cords for your 110 volt and 250 volt connector. So everything that you're gonna need to get this system installed in place of your current system. This is a nice high quality material kit. So these plastics are a UV and heat resistant resin. So they'll hold up really well. External metals are a marine grade 316 stainless steel. So they're gonna resist corrosion and do a great job for us for a long time to come. Now this kit, all these components are made here in the USA. So you can trust they are made to the high quality standards that we've come to know and trust for products that are made here in the US. This system has several twins. So this is the black inlet cover. So make sure that that's gonna work for you, your setup and match your other plugs and covers. But there is also a white, a gray, a stainless steel option. That stainless steel is just slightly different because it is a metal instead of the plastic. But the white and gray are exactly the same, just different colors. So make sure that you're getting the one that is gonna best match your RV's exterior setup. But overall, I'd say this is a really great option if you are considering switching over to the smart plug system. All those benefits are gonna make this a really great switch for you so that you can take advantage of that nice, secured connection so you don't have to worry about your cable coming loose or causing problems with those pins. I haven’t had a chance to install the smart plug power inlet and connector yet but based off of videos and reviews I have no doubt it will be huge improvement from the twist lock and plastic wring I currently have. Will update again once installed
Another great job by etrailer Super Quick ship. Out went twist /ring 50amp in went smart plug 50 amp. Tight fit great.
Now I feel the odds of my rig burning down are much less. The old twist power cords are dangerous and should not be used anymore.

This is a great upgrade. Our 50amp cord and inlet was arcing and was very dangerous. This product arrived on time, instructions were great and this is a complete game changer. It's a better connection no issues and easy installation. Took me about 30 minutes tops.
This was the best upgrade! We had issues with our last plug pulling down, which eventually cracked the plastic on the box. After this install we have never had an issue and it’s a more secure and snug fit. After a year, it’s held up to our full-time travels very well. I’d highly recommend.

I really like the SmartPlug! I kept noticing the old plug would turn sometimes in the socket and just about unplug itself. The SmartPlug is always secure and easy to unplug when you are ready.

Replaced the old plug and twist version that came with RV because I kept getting grounding errors from the Surge Guard. Since replacing have had positive connections. Like the locking tabs and not having the cross thread issues with the previous locking ring.
By the way, make sure you have a surge protection device that doesn't send power unless your connection is correct. Would not have known I had no ground otherwise.
I was having issues with the electric connection at the trailer. The ring around the male plug wasn't keeping the plug right to the trailer causing a couple lower outages in the trailer. This plug combination totally cured that issue. When plugged into trailer, it's a tight positive, locked fit. When electrical connections are loose, they cause heat. Could very well cause a fire. I eliminated that connection problem with this plug!!!! Highly recommend.

Fairly easy install. I like the idea of less resistance and less heat in the plug.
Best RV thing that I ever bought. This makes hooking up to power and unhooking a breeze. Was able to put it all together in about 30 minutes taking my time. One of the best things that I think other people with the old style hook up should look at to Changing if they want to make hooking and unhooking power much easier and a very secure connection.
Like it alot after not paying for eletricaty for along time and giving a update on this job paying for electricaty and having it and on demand hot water heater and running 2 ac units and for 21 days i have payed 14.00 dollars in electricaty. I haven't touched at all sense i have installed.
Great product, but installation was more involved than advertised. Licensed electrician had to work at for a while. Some of the provided screws were too short.
I like the ease of use and I feel very confident that I get a solid connection each time I plug into the camper. Installation was straightforward and relatively easy with a couple basic tools.
Perfect, upgraded my 30 amp service to 50 amp and this SmartPlug was a great upgrade, works great.

This was a great replacement for my RV power reel. The power reel slip rings were starting to fail. Never liked the system from day one so when I found this power inlet and connector I figured this would be a great replacement. No more slip rings! Seems well made. Easy to install. Flawlessly, the only thing I had to do was to reinforce the plug on the trailer side there wasnt enough board for the screws to attach, once accomplished, this plug is what is advertised, i works definitely recommend
