Snow season is here in Missouri, so it was the perfect time to try out the Meyer walk-behind salt spreader we just picked up. I have been using a cheap Home Depot spreader for years and salt just eats right through the frame.
I really like this Meyer walk-behind salt spreader. The first thing that stood out to me was the quality of the hopper, the plastic is noticeably thicker and sturdier than what you'd find on those green Scott's spreaders. The gate opens smoothly and closes forcibly and I wasn't worried one bit about the gate sticking open. That’s something I’ve had issues with on other spreaders.
It was easy to push, even with some ice on the ground. The large rubber tires will handle any terrain with ease. Cobblestone was a breeze. You can tell Meyer thought about how this thing would actually be used in real winter conditions. I was able to cover my whole driveway quickly, and the spread pattern was consistent the whole way through. Overall, I’m really impressed.

  • Salt And Fertilizer Spreader That Won't Rust Or Corrode During Seasons
Brenda, great question. The Meyer Walk Behind Spreader # ME43FR has a frame that is powder-coated steel, so it resists corrosion much better than bare metal, but it’s still wise to rinse it after every storm. The gearbox is fully enclosed to keep salt and brine off the gears. If you want maximum longevity, that’s where the stainless-steel # ME63FR shines (no pun intended); this one is basically the same and functions the same, aside from having heavier duty stainless steel frame and other...

  • How Far Will Meyer Walk Behind Spreader Be Able To Throw Salt Or Fertilizer?
Good question, Steve. On dry salt and a steady pace, the Meyer walk behind spreader # ME43FR will spread roughly 8–12 feet wide. You can dial the rate down with the control lever to narrow it for sidewalks or open it up for bigger driveways. The spread pattern’s really even thanks to that spinner plate to keep things consistent. This is also available in a heavier duty stainless steel version with part number # ME63FR Would you say your surface is asphalt or gravel? That can change how...

  • Is There Any Maintenance Difference Between Meyer Walk Behind Spreader ME43FR & ME63FR ?
Dennis, the maintenance steps are identical - rinse, dry, grease bearings, and keep 20–25 PSI in the tires. The only difference is that stainless version # ME63FR will resist corrosion better so you may not need to touch it up with paint in the future, whereas the # ME43FR may require touch up paint to continue protecting the metal from corrosion over the years. You’ll still want to oil the axle and impeller bearings and occasionally remove the gear cover to check mesh alignment. If the...

  • What Is The Difference Between Meyer Hotshot Spreader ME43FR And ME63FR
Phil, the main difference is durability. The # ME43FR uses a powder-coated steel frame and steel parts, with poly carbon hopper, while the # ME63FR swaps all metal parts for stainless steel - so no chipping or rust, even with daily salt use. The # ME63FR also has beefed up parts that are heavier duty. They both have the same poly carbon plastic 70-lb hopper, enclosed gearbox, pneumatic tires, and adjustable gate control. If you’re spreading often or storing outdoors, stainless pays for...

  • How Should I Clean Walk Behind Spreader From Meyer?
Rick, after emptying leftover salt or fertilizer that was in the # ME43FR , rinse the hopper and spinner plate with clean water and let it drain. Wipe the control cable with a little silicone spray and roll it into dry storage. Meyer recommends lubricating the axle bearings every few uses to keep them smooth. Do you clean after each storm or wait until the season’s end?

  • Is Stainless Steel Frame Worth The Upgrade On The Meyer Hotshot 70 Walk Behind Spreader?
Hey Carl! Mechanically, they’re identical. The # ME63FR just swaps the powder-coated frame and handles for full stainless steel, which resists corrosion long-term, better than the # ME43FR. The gearbox, 70-lb hopper, and pneumatic tires are the same, but stainless saves you from rust and repainting after a few salty winters. Do you store yours indoors or outside? If it stays in an unheated shed, stainless really earns its keep.

  • How Heavy Will Meyer Walk Behind Spreader Be When Fully Loaded With Salt?
Mike, full of salt, you’re pushing about 85 to 95 lbs total in the Meyer Walk Behind Spreader # ME43FR. The pneumatic tires hold 20–25 PSI and roll smoothly even on inclines, as long as you maintain that pressure and keep the unit level. You can also back off the flow-control lever slightly so it doesn’t dump too fast on the climb. Would you say the hill’s short or steady grade?

  • Which Walk Behind Spreader Is Good For Ice Melt Salt In Commercial Lot?
Carlos, the Meyer Walk-Behind Spreaer # ME43FR is perfect for small- to mid-size commercial walks and lots - anything under about 10,000 square feet is very manageable. You’ll get steady output and simple operation without needing a powered tailgate unit. If you’re covering larger lots daily, the stainless # ME63FR version is worth a look for longevity. How big is your route?

  • Big Walk Behind Spreader That Can Be Used For Fertilizer In Summer And Salt In Winter
Dana, absolutely - the Meyer walk behind spreader # ME43FR doubles nicely for fertilizer spreading and salt/de-icer spreading. The key is cleaning it thoroughly after each use. Flush the hopper, chute, and impeller with warm water and let everything dry before loading any other type of product. Meyer designed this one for both lawn and de-icing jobs, so with good care it’ll handle both seasons perfectly. Are you using granular fertilizer or a weed-and-feed blend?

  • How Much Weight Does Meyer Handheld Spreader Weigh When It's Full?
Janet, full of salt or fertilizer, you’re looking at roughly 6–7 pounds total - light enough to carry comfortably with one hand. The hopper itself on the Meyer Ice Melt And Fertilizer Spreader # ME83FR is made from durable polyethylene, so it won’t feel top-heavy. For spot treatments or short sidewalks, it’s ideal for large driveways, you might just refill once or twice. Would that weight be manageable for you, or do you prefer a strap-type spreader? There's also walk-behind units like...

  • Can You Control How Much Comes Out On Meyer Walk Behind Spreader ?
You can, Sarah. The Meyer walk behind spreader # ME43FR uses a lever-style rate plate right at the handle, so you can fine-tune the opening on the fly. The deflector shield also adjusts with two wingnuts to narrow the pattern when you’re close to edges. Once you find your favorite setting, mark it on the plate so it’s repeatable next storm. Do you tend to salt light or go heavy before storms? Anyone else dialed in a “sweet spot” for sidewalks?

  • Does Meyer Walk Behind Spreader Ship Fully Assembled? Hard To Put Together?
Tony, the Meyers walk behind spreader # ME43FR arrives mostly assembled - you’ll attach the handle, frame supports, and spinner plate with basic hand tools. Expect 15–20 minutes for setup. Meyer’s instructions are clear and include diagrams. Do you plan to store it built or break it down for summer? Anyone else time their first-season assembly tips?
