Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the rear threshold panel and interior trim panels to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, run the red hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in your trunk.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Connector: The Breakdown

Today we're going to review number HM11140254. This is the Hopkins Plug-in Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with the four way flat trailer connector. This is a custom fit part. It is designed to fit the Mazda Six vehicle starting in 2014. On any custom fit part, what I like to recommend is to go to our website, use our fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle and it will show you if this will work for your application. This part does provide a four way flat trailer connector at the back of your vehicle to power your trailer signal lights. It does connect very quickly and easily.

It uses these plug-in T connectors right here. You'll just locate the connection points which are usually behind the tail lights. Then you have to run a ground wire. This white wire is a ground wire, and then the red wire, which is a power wire to the battery. I'm going to show you in a minute how this all connects using all these parts here. It does include this tail light converter.

This is to ensure that your vehicle's wiring will match that of your trailer. This converter is a powered module converter, and that means it connects to the battery, gets the power from the battery directly. That's to avoid overloading your vehicle's electrical system. It does use connection terminals that are protected to help resist corrosion. On the four way, you'll see it comes with this nice dust cap.

When you're not plugged into the trailer, you can put your dust cap over the terminals and that protects those terminals from any damage or from the elements. This part comes with everything shown here on the table. A few specs on this: the maximum amperage for the stop and turn lights circuits is three amps per circuit. On the tail light circuit is six amps. When you go to install this, what you want to do, and it does give you a good set of instructions to step-by-step take you through installation, but basically what you will do is start on the driver's side at the rear of the vehicle behind the tail lights. You'll take this T connector that has the yellow wire and you'll go behind the tail lights and unplug the harness that's in the tail lights, connect this T connector in between there.

On the same driver's side you'll see another connector for this to T into. The wire with the brown and the red wires will connect over on the driver's side also. Then what you want to do is for the passenger side, you'll take this T connector that's on the green wire and you'll see there's an extra length of wire. That's so it runs over to the passenger side and you'll do the same. Connect this behind the tail light. Then what you want to do is take some of these included cable ties and attach this converter to the vehicle so it doesn't move or bounce around. You want to keep it attached preferably on a flat surface, you just don't want it to bounce around. The white wire with the eyelet on it, what you can do is you need a good clean ground. You can drill a hole and use the included grounding screw to give a good, clean ground. The last wire is this red power wire and that's what'll supply the 12 volt power to the converter. This will have to run your battery in your vehicle at the front of the car. They give you this length of red wire. What you'll do is take the power wire, connect it to one end, run the length of this wire up to the front by the battery, and then again use these cable ties to take up any slack in this wiring. Once you get to the battery, you don't want to connect this wire directly to the battery. You want to run it through this inline fuse holder. What you'll do is take the end with the butt connector on the fuse holder, connect it to that wire. Then you're left with this other end with the eyelet on it. This is what'll connect to the positive post of your battery. Open your fuse connector, take the included 15 amp fuse. Go ahead and install it into the fuse holder. Put the cap to protect it back on there. You should be all ready to go. They do also include some terminal or dielectric grease and that's used on any time you do electrical connections. You want to put that on the terminals and on all your connections to help prevent any corrosion. That should do it for the review on part number HM11140254. This is the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with the four way flat trailer connector.
