Maximum Protection for Your Pontoon Boat

When you're ready to cruise the lake or bay with the family on your pontoon boat, you won't want anything holding up your party. Covering your boat is a no-brainer to keep it protected during the off-season and ready to go when the summer hits. But if you live in a humid climate (like near the coast), a regular boat cover might not be enough. That hotter temperature can make it difficult to keep your boat cool, and when combined with moist coastal air, it can be a free-for-all for mold and mildew. Under these conditions, your boat will need some extra protection.

Boat cover fabric

The Taylor Made Eclipse boat cover will give you that extra protection your boat needs. The cover has a reflective, 600-denier shell that shields your boat from excessive heat, while the water-repellent fabric keeps moisture from seeping through the cover and allowing mildew to grow.

Boat cover air vents

For extra defense against mildew, the Eclipse has air vents sewn into the fabric. These built-in vents allow air to circulate in and out of the cover, expelling the warm air to keep your boat cool, dry, and mildew-free.

Finally, the adjustable support pole props up the cover, allowing it to shed water and debris.

When all of these features combine, you get a strong and durable cover that can handle even the toughest conditions, keeping your pontoon boat ready to go when you hit the water.

Boat cover diagram

To ensure a proper fit for the cover, measure the length and beam width of your boat.

  1. Length: Measure in a straight line from the tip of the bow to the stern. Include any rear deck extensions (platforms). Do not include bow spirits, rudders, outboard motors, motor brackets, handles, or other fittings and attachments. Do not measure up and over the windshield.
  2. Beam width: Measure the boat's flat width at its widest point, usually near mid-ship.

Video Transcript for Taylor Made Eclipse Pontoon Boat Cover Review

Shane: Hey guys, Shane here with etrailer.com. Today, we're going to be taking a look at Taylor Made Pontoon Boat Cover for a Playpen. It's going to work from 22 foot up to 24 foot boats, Pontoons. And it's going to work up to 102 inch beams. So, it's going to work for some of those wider boats, like we have here. This is actually a Tritoon, so it's a little bit wider than your standard Pontoon.

Maybe you have a cover that's just wore out and you're needing a new one. I think this is a great cover, it's going to be an all season cover. So, maybe you just want to use it for a weekend, it's easy to put on, or maybe you're having it in storage, like we have here for the winter and you're wanting to keep animals from getting inside. You're wanting to keep the interior protected. It's a nice thick material, so it's going to work well. It's going to be UV protected and mildew resistant.

So, it's really going to help maintain the nice clean look on the inside, a lot less cleaning you're going to have to do later on. The first thing I noticed when I pull this out of the box is how durable the material is. A very thick, probably as material as I mentioned. When you compare it to some of the other ones, it's going to be more a tent material or a tarp material. And what happens is, if you have a tarp like that or a canopy on there over the winter, they tend to get brittle.

When they get brittle, they start tearing apart. Another thing, is the strap where they tie down on the other ones.A lot of times you're going to have the strap and it's going to be sewn a one-inch spot there. And you're actually pulling on that one spot. Nice thing about this, if we come up here where the strap is sewn in, it's actually sewn into a double-sided flat and it's got two stitches on it, or two seams where it's stitched in, instead of just one. Come up here to the top, where it's actually sewn in to the canopy part, it's double stitched and it's six inches wide rather than one inch.

So, the pull down force on it is actually spread out over six inches rather than pulling on one. So, you're getting a lot better pull down on it, a lot more strength out of your top. Another thing that I really like about this cover when you compare it to some of the others, is how many straps it has on it.Some of the other ones that may only have maybe two or three straps along each side, maybe one of the front and one of the back. What tends to happen is, with that low amount of straps air can get up under there and it starts flapping the inside. Well, if you have poles, what can happen is that pole can come loose, so it could tear through the top. These have six straps along each side, it's going to have one in the front and it's going to have three in the back. On top of that, it also has a bungee that runs through this sphere, all the way around the whole thing. So, in the back, once you get it on you cinch that bungee up and it takes this and pulls it up tight against the boat. As I mentioned before, this is designed for Playpen. So, for some of you that don't know what a Playpen is, the Playpen is a part of the boat where all your seating is inside the rails. With this boat here, our Playpen actually stops here and we have two seats up in the front. But, with this being 24 foot, we we're actually able to take it and put it right over the two corners, cover the front, so we don't have to get coverage for those seats, it actually covers it. In the back, we we're able to cinch it up and it's nice and tight. So, we're not going to get airflow underneath this canopy to cause damage to it. Now, the thing I really like, I really like the two-tone color. Some of your other ones, again, like I mentioned, the real lightweight material. A lot of times they're only going to come in one or two colors, maybe a light tan, maybe a darker Brown.I really like the gray, the two-tone gray on this, I think it fits really nicely. I think it looks really good on the boat. Having the two-tone color of the dark gray on the bottom, it's going to make it a lot easier when you're putting it on. Because the dark gray goes on your side, so when you're unrolling it, when you find the two gray sides, it's going to make it a lot easier to put it on and it's going to make a lot easier to line it up. So, you have somebody over there, you can find a mark on the side of the boat, line it up there, have somebody on their side, line up the same way, and you're straight. When you compare it to some of the other ones, when you put another one on, a different kind, what happens is the interior of the boat, while it's on, heats up. Well, that can create mold and mildew on all of your vinyl seats. So, what this does, this is designed to keep the interior much cooler. Keeping it cooler is going to resist the mold and mildew that builds up on your seats, which is going to cut down your cleaning process, when you get your boat back out at the beginning of the year or beginning of Spring.Another thing, this cover is actually going to come with one pole and it's the very back pole back there. I will say, I don't think it's enough. So, what we did is we picked up the two front poles that you see here. This is a canopy support system. You can also find those here at etrailer.com. We pick those up and you can see now we have three poles stretching across the center of it, and it's going to keep the center up, make sure all the water and everything runs off, instead of pulling up in the center. Another nice thing I like about it is, this cover is going to have vents on it. It's going to have one on each side and you can see the two holes here. What this allows us to do, is keep fresh air inside the boat. That's what's going to help keep it from heating up.Another thing, is that a lot of Pontoons and Tritoons, actually most of them, the fuel tank is under one of the seats. So, it's going to allow some of the residual fumes from the tank that maybe caught inside, it's going to allow them to escape. So, another really nice feature about this top that I like. The cover itself is going to be mold and mildew resistance. So, it's going to stay looking clean and you're not going to get the green mold like you do on some tops. Some personal experience I'm going to give you, this is actually my mom and dad's boat. And I bought two different covers for them, over the past two years. One of them was the lightweight cover that I was talking about earlier, which is the tent material. It didn't last one season. It ripped where the straps, as I mentioned, they ripped off. So, I decided to try heavy duty tarp, which are designed to cover stuff. It lasted three weeks, tore holes right through the center of it. Again with the tarp, it dries up and it gets brittle. But, you wouldn't think after three weeks. With this one, my mom and dad had seen it on, they like it, they know it's going to last, and with all the tie-down spots along the whole boat, we know we're not going to get a lot of wind underneath. We're not going to have to worry about the inside of it flapping around. We got plenty of protection to get that water or anything else that may fall on top of it, off. So, all that being said, that's going to do it for a look at the Taylor Made Pontoon Boat Playpen Cover..

Very good quality. This is our second cover, as the last one finally ripped in the wind (5 years old). Very pleased with fit of cover and all the accompanying accessories (straps, pole and carrying bag).
