Installation

To install this lock simply insert the ball into the coupler's ball socket. Insert the collar into the base plate until it's snug against your trailer latch and the holes align with the holes in the base plate. Insert the lock through the holes in the base plate, and use your vehicle's ignition key to secure it.

When you insert your own key into the cylinder, spring-loaded plate tumblers move up and down until they are matched exactly to that key. The first time the key is rotated, the cylinder is uniquely coded to that key. When the key is removed, the cylinder moves into the locked position. When the key is turned again, it will rotate to the unlocked position.

Video Transcript for Bolt Trailer Coupler Locks - Surround Lock - BL7032491 Review

Speaker 1: Today I'm going to take a look at the bolt trailer coupler lock for the one and 7/8 inch, two inch and two and 5/16 inch couplers. And this is for the Ford key.Now this lock will work with most Ford Mercury and Lincoln cars and trucks. Now what I would recommend to do is on the product page of this part number, if you look at the very bottom it'll list many of the vehicles it'll work on.This is a universal coupler lock that'll protect your trailer from tow away theft by preventing hookup. The lock cylinder on it uses the bolt technology and it codes to your vehicle's ignition key. Basically what happens is when you insert your own key into the cylinder, the spring loaded plate tumblers will move up and down until they're matched exactly to that key.So then the first time the key is rotated, the cylinder is uniquely coded to your key, and then when the key's removed the cylinder will move into the locked position. And then when you put the key back in, it'll rotate to the unlock position. Now one note on bolt locks, they do permanently code to just one vehicle that cannot be recoded or re-keyed.

The cylinder also uses a six plate tumbler sidebar on the lock to prevent picking or bumping. Now on the plate and the shackle, it's a hardened steel hardware for extra security. Does offer an interchangeable ball and the steel base plate which inserts into the ball socket on the coupler. The two different sizes, the smaller one that I got bolted on now, that'll fit the one and 7/8 inch and two inch couplers. And then the larger one you bolt on if you need the for two and 5/16 inch coupler. I have a steel collar. Let me pull the pin out here, the steel collar right here, it's a seven position steel collar.

This will restrict the coupler latch movements, so once you put your coupler on there, you lock this down over it. That'll prevent the lock or the latch from being opened. If you notice the finish on it, it's a red and black powder coat finish to help resist corrosion and they use red on the plate. That makes it a visible theft deterrent. Now it includes everything shown here on the table. It includes the bolt cylinder lock, the base plate with the two interchangeable ball sizes, the steel shackle, again, that'll fit most coupler and latch styles and the steel pin that slides through to shackle that the cylinder will lock too.So what I'm going to do now is I happen to pull a coupler, a two inch design couple or just to show you how this will operate. So here's a standard coupler that fits a two inch ball.

It's a latch style you see. You just pull open the latch to install it.So what you want to do is on this plate, and again we bolted on the correct size ball there, so just open your latch, drop it onto there, put the latch down, that'll lock it into place there. And then the lock, what you want to do is, if you look at the plate, you'll see there's two rows of slots here that the shackle will fit on. You want to put it in the correct one that when you slide it in, it'll cover the latch. The first one here won't work because it won't cover the latch, so if you put it in this one, push it all the way down until it goes over the latch, just like that. And then take your steel pins, line up with the correct hole, get a correct hole lined up. There we go.

And then slide it all the way through.Just line that up, there we go. Slide the pin all the way through, and then you'll take your lock after you already had a keyed and just go ahead and attach it on there and that'll lock it into place. And basically what happens is this shackle right here will lock over the latch, so even if you pull up on the latch, it won't unlock from what you've got it attached to. And there's no way somebody could hook up to this until way your trailer. So a nice coupler lock. And then to remove it again, just remove, put your key in, remove the cylinder, slide the pin all the way out, pull off the shackle. Unlatch it, and you can remove right from the lock. Simple as that. But that should do it for the review on the bolt trailer coupler lock for the one and 7/8 inch, two inch and two and 5/16 inch couplers for the Ford key.

Really like that this works off my key and u don’t have to carry additional keys!! However, this only comes with 2 size balls, not 3 as advertised. I think it’s assumed if you have a 2” hitch, you will just use the 1-7/8 ball. But I can actually lock it (as tight as it will go) with the trailer locked in to it and still remove it easily. If it had an actual 2” ball, this wouldn’t happen, or if it could cinch down tighter, but I can’t get it to fit thru the next set of holes on the black piece. Love the idea, but unfortunately can’t recommend this product.

Still works great. I love not having to carry extra keys. I pull a trailer every day and it’s very convenient!!

Keyed to our 1996 f350 and using on our Demco hitch. Bought this with the plan to weld up some extensions covering the hitch bolts that connect to trailer. Should not be difficult since it is made from steel.

I have purchased other hitch locks in the past. Most of them have exploded when hit with a large hammer, because I have lost the key. This lock is well built out of harden steel. The lock is keyed to the truck so I will never have to bring out the hammer, (even if I had to break out the hammer, I do not believe it will affect the lock). Thank you etrailer for bring it to my attention.

working perfect, I still love it. I have shown it to friends, who later bought one. They love it!

I am very pleased with the product. I don't know if it is unbreakable, mine has not ben attacked, but it sure looks like it will stop the bad guys.
The company is first rate, the second time I tried to remove my BOLT off it was stuck, key would not work. I called customer service, the lady was very nice, told me how to remove the old one. They sent a replacement free of charge. The replacement worked fine.

A very neat way to lock you trailer. The best part is that the key to your truck works the lock. No more keeping up with the keys to the trailer locks.

by:

Excellent quality for the price! This unit is simply handsome! Works well with my 2 5/16 hitch that no other lock wanted to fit on. The keyed to your vehicle is a nice feature as well! ;

2014 Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty

It's been a year already! I bought two of these as soon as I knew they were available. The main feature I liked was using the truck key, less crap to remember and carry around. I am also impressed with the function of this lock, it looks intimidating as well. Obviously any lock can be defeated but this gives me peace of mind in my neighborhood.

by:

Very heavy duty and fits tight. Best lock I’ve found. Also nice not adding more keys to key ring.

by:

This is the 2nd one of these that I’ve ordered from etrailer. Very well made. A thief would have to saw for a while to get this off. And the whole Bolt product line makes sure you have one less key to lose.
