Video Transcript for Roadmaster Hy-Power Diodes (Qty 3): The Breakdown

Speaker 1: Today we're taking a look at the Roadmaster high powered diode. Now this will allow motor homes or RV's to power the lights on the towed vehicle without power feedback. The diodes allow electrical current to flow in one direction, so that'd be from the motor home to the vehicle or to the car. This prevents any electrical feedback and the damage it may cause to the electrical components. This is available in a variety of quantities, so you can get a one pack, a two pack, three pack, or four pack. All options are available at etrailer.com. For a one pack, use part number RM-790, for two pack use part number RM-792, for a three pack use part number RM-793, and for a four pack part number RM-794.The spade connectors allow for easy treble free wiring connections.

Also on the back of the packing it has detailed wiring instructions. So that's really going to be helpful. So when you get these, please do not discard the packaging because it has the nice wiring instructions on the backside. The aluminum heat sync helps prevent overheating, the self stick pad on the back allows for easy and secure mounting. Maximum load is 85 amps per diode, and please note that four diodes are required for most applications. One for the left turn brake, one for the right turn and brake, and then two for the tail lights, one per side. That's going to do it for today's look at the Roadmaster high powered diode..

I needed a way to flat tow my 1951 M38 Korean War Jeep (converted to 12 volt). I picked up three of these diodes (stop, Left, right) and wired them into my jeep and trailer harnesses . Now when I connect the Jeep to my tow vehicle, the Jeep tail lights slave off the tow vehicle, yet when I disconnect my tow vehicle, the Jeep light revert back to the jeep harness. Made my flat tow capability very easy. Input side is two connectors, output side is single connector. One small issue is I needed a couple extra after market solder-less connectors since the ones that came with the diodes were too large for the trailer harness wire I was using. Crimping the connectors were not a tight enough connection....but with smaller connectors, the diodes now work great. Been using them for over a year now with zero issues.

When converting 4 pin to 7 pin, I used this kit as a source for trailer aux (4-pin brown) after other troubleshooting failed. A shop installed my 4 pin controller and it turns out my car doesn't supply a voltage to the quick-clipped lead for brown (and has an empty light bulb holder reserved for another model). Yes the leads in the kit are thin, but so are stock leads pumping 12v.

They work as expected. I installed them near a junction box for secondary backup lights on my truck. They allow me to use a switch to turn on the LED lights as well as them come on automatically when my truck is in reverse. I've recommended these to several other folks that need additional lighting solutions on their vehicles or trailers.

Installed 6 of these to wire up my 04 Honda CR-V as a Toad. They work great so far, lights come on from either the CR-V or the RV. Nice that they come with the terminal lugs so all you have to do is strip and crimp the wires.

by:

Product works really well and looks very clean when installed. I only needed two for my application, so the 3-pack ensured I always have a spare as well.

by:

Nice product. Works as described. Saves causing damage to vehicles electrical system.

by:

It fit my Explorer perfect and works great when I tow it behind my motorhome.

by:

Indestructible diode. Do not wire under vehicle. Rain, Snow & Salt will rot the terminals off.

by:

They work great. No issues.

I just bought this aa spare in case I messed up a diode in the kit.

by:

The wrong one originally sent. Roadmaster gave me this part number so I could order the correct ones. They work as advertised.

by:

I needed to add the diode to the wiring to complete installing the Brake-Lite relay. etrailer made it easy to order and receive it.

by:

These things worked perfectly for my needs. I used one on my 4500 Chevy Kodiak air compressor for the air ride seats. I wanted to be able to turn the compressor on/off without starting the truck, and still have it run when the ignition switch is on. These diodes allow that to happen. I also plan to add one to control the reverse lights. It will allow me to use the reverse lights when I load things in the nighttime without having to start the truck and put it in reverse.

by:

etrailer is a breeze to work with and always has what I need. Not sure yet on the quality of these parts, they are replacements for some installed less than a year ago. We'll see if these next 2 last a little longer.

by:

Great little part that does the perfect job of protecting my electrical circuit between my fifth-wheel trailer and my truck. It does a great job of keeping the 12 volt power flowing in the correct/one-way direction.

by:

Fast shipping, Very Knowledgeable and reliable, A great company. Will buy from them again.

by:

Used on a trailer to add a strobe function on my existing trailer lights, and not backfeed to the truck. Has worked great for over a year now, in snow and rain it hasn’t failed.

by:

Everything is good

by:

I have placed a few orders with etrailer and have been very satisfied with the quality and arrival time of each order.

  • Are the Roadmaster Hy-Power Diodes Water Tight
As long as you are not exceeding the 85 amps at 12 volts per diode max load then you can definitely use the configuration in your diagram. I spoke with my contact at Roadmaster who said that the connections are not watertight but the internal components are. You would either need to find a way to make the connections watertight (as you mentioned in your diagram) or simply wipe the connections off if you were to go off-road with your 2011 Jeep Wrangler and get the diode(s) wet. • Does Roadmaster Hy-Power Diode Have Any Voltage Drop
The Roadmaster Hy-Power Diodes haven't been tested for voltage drop since they are designed to be a pass-thru device that just keeps backfeeding from happening. When I reached out to my contact at Roadmaster they said that the voltage drop would be very minimal if anything. I like the Hy-Power Diodes because of how durable and effective they are. You can get this diode in a handful of qunatities: 1 - # RM-790 2 - # RM-792 3 - # RM-793 4 - # RM-794

  • RV Brake and Towed Vehicle Brakes Both Applied via Diodes
I spoke with my contact at TowReady and he said the brake lights will come on normally when both the brake pedal on the RV and towed vehicle via a Brake Buddy are applied. He said if either brake is pressed the brake lights will come on. When both brake pedals are pressed at the same time the brake lights will come on. He also said 2.1 amps per side is plenty to handle your CR-V's brake light. They should illuminate normally when both the RV and towed vehicle brake pedal are applied.
