Hitch for 2002 Ford Ranger Thunderbolt With Factory-Installed Step Bumper

Question:

I just purchased a 2002 Ford Ranger Thunderbolt edition truck for use in my business I hope. It has the 4.0 V-6. I need to fit it with a Class III hitch to tow a dual axle 4,500 lb max trailer short distances. The truck has a stock low rear bumper with no place for a hitch. What are my options? I am not opposed to cutting a hole in the bumper if I need to as this is a work truck.

If your 2002 Ford Ranger has a factory-installed step bumper we do offer one hitch that will fit, part # 75082 from Draw-Tite. Do please note that this hitch has a maximum gross trailer weight rating of 4000-lbs unless used with a weight distribution system, in which case its capacity increases to 6000-lbs. This hitch does not come with a ball mount, pin and clip so you might consider the etrailer Ball Mount Kit # 989900 as an all-inclusive option.

Weight distribution systems must be selected based on measured trailer tongue weight. The linked articles will give you important background on how to measure tongue weight and how the various weight distribution/sway control systems work. I have also included a link to our main page for weight distribution systems where you can review options based on your trailer's fully-loaded measured tongue weight.

You will want to consult your owner's manual or local dealership to confirm the truck's towing capacity before attempting to tow anything.
