Will Curt Hitch for 2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid Hold More Than 200 lbs of Tongue Weight?

Question:

Hi folks, would you be able to help me with this, please? My vehicle is a 2025 Mazda CX50 Hybrid. I currently have the Mazda Hybrid Lifestyle Mount Mazda part VC67V3920 with a 2 inch receiver. The max weight for this set up is 200 lbs and that wouldnt be enough for a hitch mounted tire carrier, full size spare tire, Thule Epos 2 bike rack, and 2 mountain bikes. Can I replace the Mazda mount VC67V3920 with Curt C33MJ on the Mazda CX50 hybrid? Will that set up accommodate the weight of a swing out tire carrier, spare tire, bike rack, and mountain bikes. I dont plan to tow. Thanks for your help.

Hey AM!

The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C33MJ has a tongue weight rating of 525 lbs so the hitch itself can handle quite a bit. When I looked up the owner's manual for your 2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid it looked like they have the max tongue weight rating listed to be 10% of the trailer tow rating, so I recommend checking out your copy of the manual to make sure you know what the lower limit is (the hitch, or your CX-50).

The Thule Epos Bike Rack # TH99XE is an excellent choice for your setup, but I'm also curious about how you plan on carrying the spare too? Will it be at the same time, or will you be swapping between the two?

Thanks Jon. I was hoping to carry the RiGd Supply UltraSwing Tire Rack with a full size spare tire (120lbs) at all times and then add on the Thule Epos Bike Rack with 1 or 2 bikes (41 lb + 60 lb) on occasion. So the total weight on the hitch would be around 225 lbs. Mazda's lifestyle hitch is rated for a maximum of 200 lbs and the Mazda CX50 hybrid is rated for 1500 lbs of towing. Mazda states never to exceed 200 lbs when using their branded lifestyle activity hitch.

@AmT I like that setup! So the tire and bikes will weigh in at 221 lbs (according to your numbers), but we also need to add the 38.1 lbs for the bike rack, and then another 65 lbs for the UltraSwing Tire Rack as those count towards tongue weight as well. this means we're looking at closer to 324 lbs. I know the Curt hitch can handle that weight, but since Mazda is kind of back and forth on the weight ratings, I highly recommend speaking with a local Mazda dealer to see if they can give you more insight as to whether it's safe to have a 324-ish lb tongue weight using an aftermarket hitch. This is a really sweet setup, but we definitely want to make sure you'll be traveling safely with it!

@JonG Thanks Jon. The total weight for the set up is 221 lbs. (Ultraswing Tire Rack - 65 lbs, Tire - 55 lbs, Bike Rack - 41 lbs, Bikes - 60 lbs) I'll check with Mazda for sure. I appreciate your advice.

@Am-in-tennessee Ah, I see now - thanks for the clarification! I was looking at those as individual weights. With just 221 lbs you'll likely be fine, but it wouldn't hurt to check with Mazda like you said.
