Updated 05/31/2024 | Published 05/26/2024

Question:

I currently have a Grand Design 398M. The RV currently have the Westlake ST 235/80 R16 range E 10pr 124/120L. Im not familiar with this size of tire. I am at 21000lbs fully loaded. Do I need a G rated tire?

Hey Bill, great question. The Westlake ST235/80R16 Load rage E Radial trailer tires have a max load rating of 3,520 lbs at 80 PSI. With your 2019 Grand Design 398M being a triple axle, your tires have a total capacity of 21,120 lbs. So, while you are still under capacity at 21,000 lbs, you are cutting it very close.

Do you need to urgently go out and purchase new tires? No. Should you replace them with G range tires next time you are due for new tires? Yes, this would be a good move.

If you want to stick with the Westlakes, I recommend the Westlake ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range G # WE76FR. These have a thicker sidewall and a higher max PSI. They are rated for 4,080 lbs apiece so 24,480 lbs total. The online user guide indicates that the 2019 Grand Design 398M has a GVWR of 20,000 so please do be mindful of your total cargo weight.
