Question:

I have a 2018 Subaru outback. If I used this hitch-cargo system, would I be able to open my trunk when the cargo rack is empty? What if I utilize the entire 24 x 60 area and stack it up to 40 inches, will the trunk open w/o hitting the items I placed on the rack?

Empty yes. With 40" of stuff in it no. You will be able to load up the cargo carrier and be able to open your trunk with gear stacked up to 21" tall. The top of the Reese Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches item # 63153 sits 8" above the top of your Subaru's hitch receiver. The closest part of the carrier to the hitch pin hole is going to 12-3/4".
