Installing the Universal Trailer Wiring Kit on a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser
Updated 03/20/2023 | Published 03/17/2023 >
Question:
Want to put this on a 2007 FJ cruiser with a 4 flat trailer kit. In the downloadable instructions didn’t see anything on wiring it up, especially the fuse requirements as your 7 pole with 4 flat kit has a 20 or a 30 available. Also with the backup, which isn’t covered in the video, would you just splice this into the back up wire on a tail light? A diagram of the wiring would be helpful in the video, especially the fuse hook up. Thanks

The installation instructions for the Universal Installation Kit # ETBC7 is a bit generic, and that's on purpose. Since each vehicle is different we just try to give a general overlay of what circuits the different wires need to be connected to - this will be what you'll follow for your 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser. I've attached a photo of the connector that comes with the kit which will hopefully shed a little more light on the subject for you.
There aren't any fuses in this kit but it does include 3 circuit breakers rated at 20, 30, and 40 amps. You're going to use the 40 amp breaker on the 12V power circuit that goes directly from your vehicle battery back to the 7-Way, and then you'll use either the 20 amp or 30 amp breaker for the 12V power wire used to power your brake controller - you need to refer to the brake controller instructions to determine which one is better suited for this application. If you jump to the "Part 2" video of the ETBC7 installation you'll see where we are installing the circuit breakers.
When it comes to the backup light you will simply tie into the reverse light function on your FJ Cruiser, wherever it's easiest to do so. This is something we typically don't go over in the ETBC7 installation videos because it's hit or miss as to whether that reverse function actually needs to be active.
Hopefully this helps to clear up any questions you had. Feel free to reach back out with anything else!
