How To Remove A Defective Air Lift 1000 Helper Spring Air Bag

Question:

Hello. I had these installed about a year ago and one bag now has a tear. Ive got the replacement and am thinking of doing it myself. The defective bag has not collapsed . Im guessing the best way to get it out is to take a knife and cut it out??

I do not recommend cutting the bag from your Air Lift 1000 Air Helper Springs for Coil Springs - Rear # AL60818 as you could potentially hurt yourself or damage other components of the air springs or your vehicle. These bags were designed to be able to handle a lot of pressure so they will be hard to cut through. The best way to remove them is to remove the rear coil that has the defective bag and then pull the bag out. This will also allow you to easily insert the new bag before reinstalling the coil.

The correct airbag replacement for this coil spring set is the # AL60318 and the correct air line kit is # AL22007.

Is there a trick to “pulling the bag out?” I have removed the entire spring assembly but cannot remove the airbag from the coil. It’s proving nearly impossible to flatten the bag enough to get it through the coil gaps and the end is too narrow to just pull it out the bottom or top. I’m replacing the coils but hoping to reuse the bags. Thanks for any help.

@Justin I've found that folding the air spring long ways, or if you remember back to grade school "hotdog style", will allow you to get the bag slim enough to slip through the coil springs. You can also lift the vehicle by the frame and let the suspension hang down to give yourself a bit more room to work with.
