Question:
I have a 2014 Toyota FJ. 4WD, 6cyl, Automatic Trans rated at 4700lbs tow capacity. The tow hitch has a 4 pin plug. Trailer is a 2021 Escapod Topo Tear. Dry weight fr 1750-2000lbs with a tongue wt fr 135-300. It is equipped with 10inch electric brake assembly rated at 3500lb axle. What brake controller is recommended here? Proportional or time delay? Do I need to change out the 4 pin plug for a seven pin plug? Easy to self install or have a shop do it? Appreciate the help folks as I plan to purchase here.

Helpful Expert Reply:
I always recommend going with a proportional style brake controller. These controllers are much better as they can automatically adjust braking force sent to the trailer to match the braking force in your 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser. This saves you from have to constantly adjust a timed brake controller for light or severe braking. I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 as being the most user friendly proportional controller. It is customizable and features a LCD screen with diagnostic features that will help walk you through any issues that might come up with your trailer brakes.
To install this in your FJ you will need a Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7. This will connect to your 4-way flat connector that you already have and provide you with the wiring and connectors necessary for installing the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 in your FJ.
I have linked a few videos below that explain these products in better detail as well as show installation of the # ETBC7 on a older 2008 FJ so that you can see what all is involved. You will be able to better judge your confidence level after watching these videos to determine if you feel comfortable installing these items yourself. If you prefer to have it installed at a shop we now have a "Locate installers near me" button on both product pages just below the installation videos and images that can help you find a installer with your zip code.
