Recommended Electric Trailer Brakes With Haynes/AL-KO 5 Bolt Brake Mounting Flange Pattern

Question:

You are correct. The drums are exactly 12” X 2 1/4” (that’s pushing it. 2 1/8” is safer). I cannot find a rating on the axle. My guess is that it’s about 3000. The axle spindle is welded into a 2X2 thick wall square tube steel. The wheels are 14 1/2. Also The trailer brakes are probably left and right. Do I need a different set of brakes for front axle vs back axle? Or the same set will work for both?

You are correct that there are two different 5 bolt brake mounting flange bolt patterns, but I recommend re measuring your drums as they should be either 12" or 12'1/4". You will want to measure your current drums according to the included diagram.

The Hayes/AL-KO Hydraulic Brake Kit - Duo Servo - 12-1/4" - Left Hand/Right Hand - 9K to 12K # K23-524-00-2 use the larger 5 bolt pattern as shown in the included diagram, but are designed for 9000-12000lb axles and use a 12-1/4" drum. If this matches your axle rating and drums these would be a great choice.

The standard 5 bolt flange like what is found on the # AKEBRK-6 is quite a bit smaller as you can see in the included diagram.

If you can email me the axle rating of your axles and the dimensions of your drums I would be happy to recommend the correct brake assembly for you.

I included a video of the # K23-524-00-2 for you to take a look at.

The only 12" brakes we offer use the standard 5 bolt mounting flange pattern, and are typically used on 5200lb or larger axles. As long as your the mounting pattern on your brake flange matches the included diagram of the standard 5 bolt flange, I recommend using the Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 12" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 5,200 lbs to 7,000 lbs # AKEBRK-6 as it will work perfectly in your 12" x 2-1/8" drums. This kit includes braking assemblies for each side of the trailer, and there is no difference between the front and back axle. You will just need an additional kit. I included a few videos of the # AKEBRK-6 for you to take a look at.
