Which Electric Brakes Do I Need For My Horse Trailer

Updated 01/27/2021 | Published 01/24/2021

Question:

How do I determine Axle Weight for e-barkes on a 300 pound 2 horse trailer with tandem axles? GVWR is 5000. Please suggest the best ebrake package for this. I also have to see the wheel diameter? I believe their 10 inch.. Thank you

You should be able to locate a spec sticker on the center of the axle that will give you the capacity, which should lead you to the correct brake size for your trailer. There could be two likely options for this trailer depending on the axle size- either 7" for 2500-lbs axles, or 10" for 3500-lbs axles or larger. If you can't find the spec sticker you can just measure the inside of the drums to determine the best fit.

From what it sounds like, the most likely scenario puts 10" brakes on your trailer, so I recommend using the Electric Trailer Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting - 10" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 3,500 lbs # AKEBRK-35-SA. These are self adjusting brakes, so they won't require any real maintenance or adjustment once they're installed. These brakes will work with wheels between 14" and 15" in diameter and mount to 4 bolt mounting flanges. These do not come with mounting hardware so you'll also need that, which is available with part # BRKH10B. You will need 2 sets of brakes and 2 sets of mounting hardware for a tandem axle trailer.

I've linked some review videos of these parts for you to check out. If you check your axle capacity and determine that you've got something different, just let me know and I can help you get the correct parts.
