How To Install a Brake Controller On a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox
Question:
I have watched several videos how to install and connect an electric brake controller in a 2015 Chevy Equinox which I understand. It is my understanding that a wire at the back of the Equinox needs to be connected to the wire on trailer that goes to the electrical brakes. Is there a wire in the Equinox wiring system at the back of the Equinox for this purpose. If so, where can I find that wire located on the back of the Equinox? If there is not a wire to use, do I need to run a seperate wire from the brake controller to the trailer electric brake wire. Please note that my Equinox did not come with a factory towing package. Thanks

The installation of a standard brake controller such as the Tekonsha Voyager Trailer Brake Controller part # 39510 on a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox will require four connections to be made. The first connection is to the battery for power, the second is to the battery or a bare metal surface for ground, the third is to the stop light switch which needs to be accessed through the body control module, and the forth is to the trailer connector for brake output. It sounds like you are referring to the brake output wire and if that is the case then you must run this wire from the back of the brake controller all the way up to the trailer connector as there isn't any wire you can splice into for this.
The above is a lot of work and does require splicing into the vehicle so it is not what I recommend. Instead, I recommend the Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller part # C51180 which only requires you to run a wire from the back of the 7-way to the battery for 12v power but there is no routing wires in the cab or splicing into the stop light switch circuit.
