Worm Gear Hand Winch and Strap to Lift a 50 lb Rooftop Carrier Off of a 2012 Honda Accord

Question:

I have a question regarding the Dutton-Lainson Trailer Winch - DL10950 Worm Gear, Regular Drum Handle Drive - 1,500 lb. I am looking for a hand winch that I can wall mount to a joist for raising/lowering a 50 lb rooftop carrier approximately 6-7. Can I use non stretch nylon cord on the drum I use several small pulleys from the ceiling to help raise the carrier? Im looking for an inexpensive winch and this one seems perfect! Thanks.

The Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch, # DL10950, cannot be used with a nylon strap. This is a cable only application that would work well to raise and lower your 50 lb rooftop carrier if your set up allows use of a cable

If your set up requires a strap, you could use the Dutton-Lainson WG2000 Worm Gear Hand Winch, # DL11002. This is the only worm gear hand winch we offer that will accept a strap and it has a rated capacity of 2,000 lbs.

This winch requires a 2 inch wide strap like the Winch Strap, # DL24242. I have attached a video showing how the strap installs on a hand winch.

We typically recommend using cables over straps on a winch because nylon straps will stretch over time. It is important to check the condition of the strap before and after use.

When lifting loads with a winch, make sure there is no one under the load, and that once the load is lifted into position it is secured with some other device, like chain or on a shelf, and the weight of the item being lifted is let off of the winch. The winch cable/strap can remain attached as a backup safety just in case the hardware securing the load fails.
