Products Featured in This Question
Question:
I am in the military and want to put a hitch on my 2011 Xterra to tow some of my stuff. I do not think that I will need a big trailer. I think the class III hitch is limited to like 3,500 pounds. I do not think buy the next one up would help because I believe that the Xterra towing capacity is around 3,500 pounds. Which class of hitch do you recommend and which hitch should I buy?

All of the trailer hitches available for a 2011 Nissan Xterra are going to be Class III trailer hitches. This is good because that is exactly what I would recommend. A Class III trailer hitch is going to give you plenty of gross trailer weight capacity and the 2 inch receiver will allow you more options for accessories like bike racks and cargo carriers.
Basically, all 3 of the available hitches for your vehicle install in the same way. If you are looking to save a little money, go with the CURT Trailer Hitch, # 13514. I have included a link to the installation instructions and a link to a video showing a typical installation.
If you would rather go with a towing industry leader, I would go with the Draw-Tite hitch, # 75291. Draw-Tite recently came here for a visit and talked about how they are doing more and more testing beyond what is required for trailer hitches to ensure quality. I have included instructions and video links for this hitch as well.
All of the hitches do meet Department of Transportation safety requirements and both will be safe and perform well for you no matter one you choose.
Since you are going to do some towing, I recommend the etrailer Ball Mount Kit, # 989900, which comes with 2 ball mounts, 2 balls, a hitch pin with clip, and a carrying bag. For trailer wiring, use T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with Relays # C56225 if the Xterra does not have a tow package.
If it does have a tow package, use # 118263. I have included instructions links for both harnesses for you.
