What Size Bolts Come with Trailer Hitch for 2014 GMC Terrain

Question:

I purchased a hitch from you guys for my 2014 GMC Terrain. I have sprayed penetrating oil into the weld nuts and have ran a wire brush through them several times. I’m still having a very difficult time getting the bolts into the weld nuts. I forced them in a quarter way and after that the thread on the bolt is mushroomed over. I need help finding out if these are the correct size bolts or not? I’ve been a machinist for 21 years and I know that the threads do not match. Was I given the wrong bolts? I cannot find an answer anywhere on the internet for the size. Can someone here help please? Thank you.

The hitches like the etrailer part # e98865 for your GMC Terrain do come with install bolts that are size 1/2-13 x 1 3/4 and M12-1.75 x 40mm. We installed this hitch on a similar 2014 Terrain like yours with the included hardware that you can see at the attached install video link.

We do see this problem pretty often and the solution is normally to clean the threads like you've done or use a thread tap to clean them out as the rust is very difficult to clean typically.
