Question:

Wondering if this will fit a 2004 suburban 4x4 2500? My rig weighs around 6500-7k and there isn’t one listed for a 2004 that will handle its weight. I believe it should fit because they both are gmt-800 chassis. Thank you in advanced

The Roadmaster MX base plates that fit your 2004 Chevy Suburban are # 199-6. The base plates do not have a capacity since they are designed to handle of the vehicle they were made for. It is the tow bar that will have the capacity restrictions.

There are tow bars that work with the MX base plates and have the capacity to handle a 6500 to 7000 pound vehicle. The new Nighthawk # RM-676 is one option. It is rated for 8000 pounds and has lights, safety chains, and a wiring umbilical included. I have linked a video review of this tow bar for you.

Other options include the Sterling, # RM-576, and the Blackhawk, # RM-422, rated for 8K and 10K respectively. The Sterling comes with safety cables and an electrical umbilical but the Blackhawk does not. If you go with the Blackhawk you can use safety cables # RM-653 which are also rated for 10,000 pounds.

For wiring you can use # RM-154. If you go with either the Nighthawk or the Sterling you would need to cut off the 4-Way connector on the end that will be at the front of the vehicle and attach the wires to the back of the 6-Way connector that is included with those tow bars. If you go with the Blackhawk you would just use the RM-154 as is.

You may also need a high/low adapter to keep the tow bar level. I have linked a help article showing how to measure and a link to the high/low adapters we carry.

And finally, most states now require supplemental braking on the vehicle being flat towed. One of the preferred systems for our installers and what I recommend is the SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO proportional system, # SM99251. It will apply the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking. This is the safest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on both vehicles.
