Question:
Hello there, I do have a BandW gooseneck hitch # BWGNRK1067-5W in the truck and it is a 6-1/2 foot bed. I understand the BandW Companion 20K 5th wheel slider hitch # BWRVK3400-5W is the most optimal. However, at $$ yikes am I better buying a Reese or some other brand slider hitch and having rails installed? At any rate, a slider is necessary?

A sliding hitch is necessary for a short bed truck if you don't have a Sidewinder style rotating pin box to give you the turning clearance you need so your trailer doesn't make contact with the cab of your truck. Although the B&W Companion Slider # BWRVK3400-5W is the one of the best options for a slider, you are correct that you do have other options.
The biggest issue is that you can't have 5th wheel rails and your gooseneck installed at the same time due to the mounting locations, so an adapter is needed. You have a couple options to get the rails you need for a standard sliding 5th wheel hitch. You can use the Curt X5 5th Wheel Base Rails Adapter for B&W Turnoverball Gooseneck Trailer Hitches - 20,000 lbs # 16310 or the Demco 5th Wheel Base Rails Adapter for B&W Turnoverball Gooseneck Hitches # DM6140.
Then you can use a standard slider like the Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ R16 Slider - Dual Jaw - 16,000 lbs # C16521 or many others. I've attached a link to all your options.
