Are Larger Tires or an Over-Under Conversion Kit Recommended for Trailer Clearance Issues

Published 12/07/2017

Question:

I am trying to decide if i should do the axle flip kit for my 3500# dexter axle 16BH trailer vs just going to the larger size 13 inch tire and being happy with the 1/2 inch extra height that gives. My main issues with the height have been when going dirt camping and worrying about hitting the dump valves as well as the valves are low enough to where at some dumps i have to get creative with block just to drain the trailer. You sell all of these options so i figured i would check with yall first. Its a single axle 16bh coachmen clipper with the 175/80-13 tires. Thanks for the help and letting me know the downsides to whichever.

If you are constantly having clearance issues then I recommend going with the over-under conversion kit as opposed to bigger tires. Unless you think that 1/2" is going to cut it and make you feel comfortable the conversion kit is the way to go as it will increase the height of your trailer equal to the diameter of your axle plus the height of your leaf spring stack. It will be a little more involved than just swapping out tires, but I believe you will be more pleased with the end result.

Since you have a 3,500 lb axle you will most likely need part # K71-384-00 which is for 2-3/8" axles. However, if you happen to have a 3" axle you will want to go with part # K71-385-00 instead.

Review videos have been linked for both parts as well as links to the installation instructions.
