Split Reel Winch to Move Around Boat Hoist, Frame Into and Out of the Water
Question:
I have a galvanized steel boat hoist that I estimate to weigh in the 600 - 800 pound range. I am fabricating a frame to set on top of two blocks of styrofoam that previously supported a swimming raft. The dual drum winch would be bolted to the frame, with cables extending to both sides. In the fall, the frame would be floated over the hoist while it is in the water and on the lake bottom. Cables would be attached to the hoist on both sides and the hoist would be cranked up off the lake bottom and floated to the shoreline where it would be put on a trailer and pulled up on the beach. Conversely, in the spring, the hoist would be wheeled into the water and positioned under the float with the cables being attached again. Once connected and raised, the hoist would be floated back out in the water and lowered to the lake bottom. I would use the shortest possible length of cable 10-15 on each drum to maximize the weight lifting limits. Do you think the winch would support this application?

Helpful Expert Reply:
Yes, a split reel winch such as Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch with Split Reel for 2 Cables - 1,500 lbs. Item # DL10952 is what you would need. You may also end up needing some pulley blocks such as # CU881080 for changes in the direction of the line(s) if not always a straight line pull.
For wire rope you could use 2 of # DL24069 which is a 3/16 inch diameter, 20 foot length of cable rated for 1,800 pounds.
