What is Recommended Clearance between Trailer Axle and Frame
Updated 06/28/2017 | Published 06/27/2017 >
Question:
I am putting a new 3500# axle spring setup under a 7 x 14 enclosed trailer. It was a torsion setup but I am now using leaf spring uni-216 setup. I have installed the spring to the axle on my shop floor but concerned that I only have 2.5 inches of clearance before the trailer is even on it. I dont want to put the axle below the spring as the trailer will sit too high. Is 2.5inch enough? In the pic the yellow level represents the frame.

The recommended clearance with leaf spring suspension on an unloaded trailer is between 2 - 2-1/2 inches. You should have sufficient clearance with your loaded trailer, as leaf springs only tend to deflect 1-1/2 inch when carrying a load.
