Towing Capability And Recommended Towing Equipment For 2014 Honda CRV
Products Featured in This Question
Question:
My question is about the total gross weight a vehicle can pull. When Honda recommends a 1500 lbs limit, is that the total weight combination of items in a closed trailer and its weight or a limit on the trailer tongue? I am looking at purchasing a 2014 Honda CRV and adding a hitch. I just reviewed your recommendation for the best hitch product and watched the installation video. The reviews of your products are outstanding. Thank you,

The vehicle manufacturer's towing capacity is what you want to go by not the capacity of the individual parts that can be rated higher. The manufacturer will give you a towing capacity as well as a tongue weight capacity in most cases.
I looked up the owners manual for a 2014 Honda CRV and the manual states the maximum allowable weight of the trailer, cargo and everything in or on it must not exceed 1500 lbs. The tongue weight of the fully loaded trailer should be approximately 10% of the total trailer weight.
For your CRV I recommend the Curt Hitch Receiver # C13119, the wiring harness # C56158, and ball mount # BWTS10038B. This combination will give you a complete towing system for your vehicle and give you a hitch that can tow different trailers level and look nice when not in use with the stowable feature.
